What is your favorite lure to use with a coyote turd and why does that combo work versus one that will turn them off completely

Leary, I don’t use much lure at the flat set look I show them now.

Why no lure?

Most lures promote a digging or pawing.

Some folks welcome digging like it’s the best reaction ever !
My guess is they're thinking " if a coyote is pawing at the set they have a better chance at making a catch".
That mindset doesn’t make a lot of sense to me for a host of reasons.

When you purposefully encourage digging, you are asking for trouble.

Urine is by far the best fit in this situation. It results in more catches with fewer defeats.
It also has a very distinct advantage over lure in a unique way.

Is that, “show them what they expect to see, let them smell what they expect to smell”?

That’s the best way to avoid arousing suspicion.

That makes four back to back adult females in a row at this set.

They say you can’t tailor an offering for a male or female. I’m not so sure about that.

This big girl was Super Dominant, and repeatedly voiced her displeasure about the accommodations.

I’ve found that vocal adult females are very few and far between.

When you do cross paths with one they tend to make quite the impression.


There is nothing better than loud sharp challenge howls and barks from a big bad adult female coyote.

It is the sound of……….. Victory.

A combined written and visual record presents a comprehensive snapshot of each individual.

When those two aspects are merged with present and post catch data the patterns become obvious.

That leads to better understanding and more consistent catches.

TEJAS what is the size of the canvas ground cover you use when you are making your sets?
Do you do anything special to it for cactus? Some of the areas l trap have cactus with needles ranging from 1” to almost 3”
I’m thinking of folding it in half and maybe putting a thick foam pad in the middle and sewing it up.

do you use knee pads? no thorns getting through the hard cap type.

I had knee replacement surgery in May, l cant kneel on both knees anymore. Plus lm concerned about scent control issues so l want to try using a canvas ground cover when l make my sets.

Leary, I had both knees replaced several years ago, Kneeling is extremely uncomfortable, but ok with knee pads... I have the red and black harbor freight cheapies, doesn't have a hard cap but they're pretty thick and firm...I have to put them on when working on the boat and any jobs where kneeling is necessary...No pain...... just hard to get back on my feet, lol

The tarp is 5x5 and is ten oz. untreated canvas.
It has sewn edges with grommets.
Even with the lighter weight it has been very durable.
The untreated canvas in smaller sizes is hard to come by.
I have not had an issue with thorns or cactus needles.
I use an industrial kneeling pad made by AWP. It is about 1.5 inches thick.
Both the tarp and kneeling pad have seen many years of service on the line.
The tarp is washed in cold water with no soap one time a year then hung to dry on the line.
The yearly wash has greatly extended the life of the canvas

Thank you James. I will head down to Wanchese after our convention next weekend and see if l can get the piece l got sewed like yours.
I have the same kneeling pad that l found at Lowe’s.

The use of a tarp is a real throwback to old school coyote trapping.

A few of those old time coyote men had insight and knowledge that put them on a different level.

For me, the use of a tarp equates to a drastic increase in first night snags along with far less education & more overall catches.

You often hear the mantra “A coyote knows you’ve been there no matter what scent precautions you take”.
That theory is strictly conjecture. It holds no water in the field.

Several factors strongly suggest you can consistently get by Wile E. undetected if you play your cards right.
His nose is far from Infallible as many suggest.

Here is the other female from the triple.
I have her at two years old.
My guess is she was the nanny to the dominant female.
She is the third female out of four catches at this set.

Looking to start using an app for trap marking instead of my old school flagging. W hat have you had the best luck using ? My phone is smart but a cheaper Samsung I enjoy your posts and was first taught that the canvas DOES make a difference about 50 yrs ago
