Just curios, has anyone gone on a honor flight? I got the opportunity to go on the one from Rochester, mn. Yesterday ( the 16th). It was an awesome time and really brought back memories. Had to be at the airport at 4:30am to be checked and get instructions. We flew to Washington D.C. and visited all the military memorials, changing of the guard. Iwo Jima and the Viet nam wall and other ares really bought back memories. It was a very long day but very inspirational. We then flew back to Rochester and landed about 9:45pm to a very nice Welcome Home crowd. I would definitely encourage everyone that is a veteran and has a Honor Fight in your to get registered and go if you get selected. You will not be disappointed.

I went about 10 years ago. My Dad was the veteran and I was his Guardian. We had a great time like you did. My Dad talked about that day a lot until he passed away a few years later. I encourage any veteran to go when I talk to one.

I found my old dress uniform coat and squeezed into it. Went to the local airport to greet the returning vets.

Many did not recognize my Coast Guard coat and hat, and had to ask.

Had tears in my eyes for about 30 minutes as the vets exited into the lobby. Will definitely go again. Plan to take my granddaughter next time. She is interested in applying to the CG Academy in three years.

Went on 2nd to last Honor Flight from Sedalia, Mo. several years ago. If I remember correctly, was close to 50 vets. Were 18, 1st, & 2nd Cav, vets plus 6, 101st AB. The Wall, was the hardest part for myself . While there had people come up and very politely asked, If we could take our potographs, after giving us our personall, time at Wall. Lady who took my pic, asked why I was leaving photos, small bottles of bourbon, and old bush hat. 1 of the Park Rangers, explained, they kind of kept civilians await from the Vets, and ley us have it for extended time. Etched names I knew, for my memories

Yes, one of the best experience of my life, but from the other side of the equation, as a guardian

We escorted WWII vets to their memorial.
Bob and Elizabeth Dole met us there.

LOL, our bus driver was a Vietnam vet who said, " These guys have walked enough" and drove, over curbs, thru the grass, whatever, to get our guys as close as possible, everywhere we went.

In our pre trip briefing we were told, " If your vet stumbles, catch him, if he falls, get under him before he hits the ground, if he gets tired, carry him. Or you WILL answer to.me".

Wish I had some pics on this phone, it's been quite a few years.

My grandpa went on one last year and although im sure the timing was coincidence, I will be forever grateful it happened. My grandma has been fighting cancer for 2 years and at 84 years old its a matter of when not if. My grandpa is 85 but in great shape so although my mom and uncles help a lot My grandpa takes care of most everything care wise. He's taken everything pretty hard. Other than surprising him with a ocean fishing trip last fall while we were out east for a cousin's wedding, the honor flight is the only other time in 2 years ive seen him his old happy go lucky self. I anticipate even though hes in great shape, after grandma goes he won't be far behind so getting to see those glimpses of the man I knew for the first 30 years of my life, I really appreciate.

My brother in law went on one earlier this summer with his son.
He flew a Cobra gunship around 1970 in Vietnam. Got shot down and luckily was rescued .
After the war he taught helicopter flying in North Dakota.
Than he flew medflight helicopter for one of the hospitals in Minneapolis until a heart attack grounded him.
He said he wished he would have gone on the honor flight earlier in life as it released alot of emotion he's been
holding inside for decades.
Much respect to him and all who served.
