I keep grass frogs for catfish bait. Keep a pan of water in it, keep it in the shade, leave a light inside all night to attract bugs and they will live all summer. Small frogs get bigger. Snake crawled in and ate one. Can't get out now.

I had a black rat snake do that years ago. It ate 3 young chukars from a nest box. I caught it and put it into a coon size cage trap. It looked like it was a triple link of sausage.

No way it could get out of that coon size trap as large as it was expanded with those chukars, as its girth was way larger then the 1" grid size on that trap.

I figured I was good for a few days holding that snake. I wanted to get a few photos for documentation. I went to get my camera.

That rat snake must have realized it couldnt fit thru the wire grid being all pigged out like it was. So it started to reguritate those chukars. When I came back to get a few photos it was just throwing up the last chukar and racing to get out that wire, and it did. This all happened in just a few minutes.

Found a massasauga rattle snake in it couple days ago. Dead frog but snake hadn't swallowed it yet. Snake took off through the 1/4 inch hail screen.

So far as I know no human has ever died after being bit by one. It is still serious. Destroys surrounding tissue, people get bad sick, infection is common. trip to the Dr is a good idea.

How?

Snakes like mice can get through a hole that is very small. It crawled through. A common name for massasauga is pygmy rattler. This one was smaller than the garter snake in the picture.

We were doing a shore lunch in NW Ont one time, my oldest daughter, 8-9 at the time saw a large snapping turtle under the water. She took a trout carcass over and started ripping it apart. In a few minuets she had the turtle taking pieces from her hand. A few years later when she was 11-12 I took her and a younger nephew on a multi portage adventure down a river in NW Ont. We stopped by a set of falls for me to clean fish and make lunch. She asked if she could have a walleye carcass and try to lure a turtle up. I asked if she saw a turtle, she said "no, I just wanna try." I said "sure, but this doesn't look much like turtle water." A few minutes later I heard a holler from my nephew over the roar of the falls. Sure enough, she was hand feeding another big snapper at the base of the falls. LOL

BUT health professionals here tell.me that treating a rattlesnake bite is a 50,000 $ bill now. Insurance would probably cover most of that but why take a chance. I lose dogs and livestock every year to snake bite so they get no quarter

Easy fix.

Cut it in two with a spade shovel. Both pieces will pull out easy.

They might want to expand the range of that map cuse we have them here.Also have Timber Rattlers.Both are protected in New york and your not supposed to kill them.
