I think its great. I buy beef that way from a local processer. Beef is raised and fed out local. Cowboy gets a few extra bucks. Butcher is making money. I'm getting meat that's been aged and at less than grocery store pricing for beef that's been cut up immediately..

I think its a good idea. Grocery store won't sell you a misshapen fruit. But I can tell you for sure they taste the same. Like lots of stuff they grade by shape/ color etc.

Cooperative purchasing, of a great many different items, can work very well. There can be some headaches for the organizers in collecting money and distribution, but they usually set themselves up for decent profits, to make the hassles worthwhile.

From my experience, many people won't buy produce that isn't near perfect looking. I go to a lot of produce auctions. Two weeks ago, large tomatoes were still going for around $2.50 to $3.00 a pound. Odd sized and odd shaped tomatoes were only 20 to 40 cents a pound, with no blemishes or other faults. I bought 60 small ears of sweet corn for $1.25 total. Normal sized ears were mostly $1.00 a dozen. Number one green and colored peppers were around $6.00 a half bushel. Chopper peppers, which are oversized, small or odd shaped, were 25 cents to 50 cents a bushel. The boxes cost the seller 50 cents, so they lose money on them.

I much prefer to buy the perfectly good to eat, cheaper, odd sized produce.

I picked about 2 gallons of tomatoes around half an hour ago. It's cheaper and easier to buy them at auction. . I might go buy another 160 pounds or so, at auction, to can tomorrow. I need to soon, before it's too late.

Geez Keith, whenever you post about these auctions it makes me wonder if it would be worth the drive up there to go to one.

You should if you want to stock up. I really like them. I mainly go to the Scioto Valley Produce Auction. It's right above Mt. Victory, Ohio, about 45 minutes from my farm. It's a decent size auction.

The auctions at Mt. Hope, Ohio are a great many times bigger, with similarly good prices. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get there. Mt. Hope also sells massive amounts of all sorts of livestock. They used to have the world's largest exotic animal sale there too, but the animal rights people got them suspended. Catherine buys the produce she flips at Mt. Hope and near there, from some of the growers. Both of those have mostly Amish produce.

If you come up this way, you and Drifter should meet up with Diane and I for supper.

The growing season here will probably be done around the 19 of October from frost, so there's not much time left this year.

Not good enough for the big box stores that buy there.
A lot of Amish also sell directly to bigger grocery stores.

LOL If you can haul skids, you can get skid boxes of things like melons at under 50 cents, cabbage and other things that are in large containers in big numbers.
Seen melons go for 10 cents each, but there were about 100 in the crate.
Same with sweet corn 5 dozen to a bag, but you need to buy 8 Bags or more at a time. @ 4-8 $ a bag, sometimes as low as 3- 5 a bag.
Great if you have a stand to sell at.
Canned 8 bags one year, still have quarts and pints of sweet corn from then.
Same with green beans.

When does the FDA get their cut ?

Nothing like that here....the local farm stands used to be a good deal, but we're over run by city people used to paying a much higher price, so the stands raised prices accordingly.. can't blame them..cheaper to get produce from costco now....
