I know Mepps does, I didn't know Groeny didn't. Saw a couple videos last year of Groeny buying tails. Groenys site doent say anything about no Grey squirrels

Check with your local fly-tying clubs. I get $1/tail from them.

A long time ago, when I first started doing a lot of squirrel hunting, before I trapped much at all, it was always kind of exciting to trade squirrel tails for lures from Mepps, even though I prefer live bait for fishing.

In the late nineties, I knew a group of around 14 old retired men, who had been mostly policeman, firefighters and bikers, who hung out, drank beer and shot yard squirrels in Dayton, Riverside , Huber Heights and New Carlisle, with pellet rifles. They would take turns hosting. It was illegal too shoot squirrels where they did it, but it was a non issue because nobody would turn them in. They got 634 squirrels one year. All the tails got saved and traded in.

I always sent my tails fox and grey squirrels to Mepps and traded them 2x for lures. Send 50 tails you did get free shipping. Things may have changed but that the way it use to be

Aparrently they still take this and double the value if you trade for lures. Will reimburse you for shipping if you send over 50 tails. I also see they do take gray squirrels.

The things you cam learn if you look them up

A few local buyers in Pa. buy Squirrel tails at District auctions.
Mepps is usually a better deal.

Odd to me to leave the bone in? Seems like that creates spoilage. Just my thinking......jk

Read right on mepd website I posted the link to, it says don't debone them they would reject those and tails that dried curved. Probably has to do with how thwy process them.

When I traded to mepps years ago. They wanted them bone in. They just cut off the fur they use for lure making and I guess toss the rest.

Couple of weeks ago while attending the fall WTA rondy in Antigo three of us took the tour of the Mepps plant right there in town. Got a walk around with the guide describing what everyone was doing at their station. I was impressed they were still using machines that were brought over from France back in the 50s.

Got to the gal who receives all the squirrel tails and she showed us how she cleans them up and runs them through the dryer. She was complaining about the odor of a couple and we asked her is she had the skunk neutralizing odor formula . . . said she never heard of it.

We left her with the formula and the trappers got a big thank you.

I told my wife I just found my side hustle disabled retirment gig. Man we are going to be rich I just know it. $12.50 for 50 tails. - $5 FOR .22 AMMO= $6.50 per 50 tails proffit. Before subtracting gas. After $3.50?

Proffits would go down if moving to a shotgun. But air gun would be cheaper than a .22
