Is it ok to replace j hooks with just a pair or two of pilers? Do i need a j hook tool? I have a dozen or so No1 jumps and long springs. Would no 2 machine chain be alright with a couple swivels? What length of chain would be recommended ? For a water line, mink, rats, possible coon. Thanks AL

You dont need a j hook tool but it does make the process easier. Preferably either Ron Marsh's tool or a pair of cable cutters.

Chain length depends on what you are doing with your traps. I dont run drowners on my water traps anymore except for beaver. So i use 3-4 feet of chain. If you run drowners, a foot is a good length that gives you some flexibility.

Food for thought.

See the J that connects to trap?
The newer good 6gauge Js wont fit there
.
You can get many suggestions, that can
lead to other troubles.

Rather than learn the hard way,
call an experienced supplier and
explain what you want to do.
The good ones love
talking trapping on the phone.

Or get a few parts and experiment
to see what will work for YOU.

Fences are for youns Easterners.

I did break a pair or those fence pliers.
Too much torque.

If you have extra chains to fit,
11.25x28 I'll trade you some Dukes.

Good to see ya stirring on here.

x2 they work great to open one too. I end up repairing fence every once in a while runnin most of y traps on drags so fence pliers are a must have close by anyway. Kinds like keepin a shovel close when in areas that have badger.

All fencing pliers are not created equal, the kind with the pincers to pull a staple would work good as a j hook tool. The newfangled double pincer pieces of crap not so much.

I figure i can either drill a hole on the baseplate opposite the spring , which is there on my longsprings or have a j hook (holder) welded on there.
