Last year I cut a couple wood blocks to fit the curved rails of the bed of my side by side to allow me to mount a cross bed tool box. It worked but this year I felt the need for something a bit more permanent and something that would let me organize a little better. So I welded up a rack that bolts to the bed and holds the tool box.

This is the SxS last year.



This is what I came up with. This is the frame initially welded up.



Then with some expanded metal and a post in each upper corner to carry snares and extension cables.



The SxS loaded and ready to trap. Pockets behind the tool box hold snare supports and bungees secure the snares and extension cables on the rails in the upper corners. The toolbox will hold 4 dozen #3 CS. I can get two totes of waxed sand and my setting tools in the space between the box and the tail gate. There’s a small tote under the tool box with extension chains and several drags. There’s also extra snare supports under the toolbox. My catch pole and death ray secured to the expanded metal.



Shovel and trap release tool ride up front and still have room for a stack of coyotes. I had 7 on that rack one check last season. Hoping to have ten on it a few times this year.

Have you had any issues with your Arctic Cat?

Just one slight issue. Last season it took to dying while idling. Seemed to idle just long enough for me to open a gate and get back to it when it would die. Started right back up but it always aggravating. Then it quit doing it.

My other Arctic Cat, a 2007 650 TRV has been a trouble free tank. And I used it hard, very hard, in Alaska. Brakes and oil changes have all I’ve done to it. And replaced the headlights. That bike has been in some awful rough country. It’s been upside down with two quartered up caribou strapped to it, dragged out hundreds of firewood logs and saw logs, hauled out two guys and two limited of Copper River red salmon on that railroad trail, which can be challenging depending on the rock slides. I plowed probably a thousand miles of driveway with it. And towed out Suzukis, Kawasakis, Hondas, Yamahas, Can Ams and Polaris. Never towed out an Argo. Cat got it right with that one.

The jury is still out on the side by side. Other than the idle it’s been a good rig so far but I’ve just used it the one season. It can pack a load though. 4 dozen #3s and two, 100 pound totes of sand ain’t a light load.
