Anyone have a good system to proscess walnuts? I peeled all the husk off. Washed them in a pail and used a paint stirrer on a drill to clean them. Do these look clean enough to now dry?

Thanks

Yup, they appear to be cleaned very well and once dry, shouldn’t mold. I made a drying rack for my pelts out of expanded metal and used it to dry the walnuts because it allowed air to flow around the nuts. My neighbor gave me a 5 gal bucket of black walnuts prepared exactly as you described from last year and none had mold!

After I knock the husks off, I run the black walnuts in a paint mixer for 20 minutes, dump them in milk crates and rinse them off, run them in a paint mixer again for 20 minutes and give them a good final rinse in the milk crates. I collected 8 heaping buckets of black walnuts today, 1 mostly full bucket of heartnuts and a single, possibly the last of the year buartnut. I should have brought more buckets with me.

I don't sell to them, but Hammonds is paying 14 cents a pound for hulled black.walnuts this year. They will husk them for you for 14 cents a pound too, if you want to keep them.

There's more details on nut processing here:

I collect mostly named nut cultivars, from grafted black walnut trees. They have a much better shell to meat ratio. Most wild black walnuts are 11% to 14% nut meat. The named varieties have up to 68% nut meat. The shells are super thin and you can crack some of them by just stepping on them hard. If you drove a vehicle over them, you would pulverize them. They mostly crack out easily, in perfect halves or quarters. The named cultivars all started out as wild trees. At some point, people noticed they had much better nuts and started propagating them by grafting. They have excellent flavor. They can have over 6 times as much nut meat in the same sized shell. They are much more reliably prolific too.

I grew up on a farm in southern wisconsin, it had one black walnut tree. Our solution to removing the hulls was to run them through an old fashion corn sheller. Did a great job on the walnuts and kept our hands clean. Must not have hurt the corn sheller because it still works!!! Though I haven’t hulled any walnuts recently. LOL

Seems to not be much to eat in my black walnuts compared to pecans or English walnuts. I have a lot of black walnuts and could get a small pick up bed full. Especially if I was planing on it and mowed around the trees making it look like a park instead of letting it grow up like ui used to keep the area.

So if I run across a corn shelter and run them through it then rinse them in water and let them dry out on a screen they will stay good and can be stored in buckets? Im still not sure the amount of nut would be worth the effort. But im going to be having more time on my hands in the future and working on walnuts a lot can be done sitting down if set up correctly.

Besides dying traps what would the husky be good to use for. Wouldn't want them in the garden. I found a lot of plants don't grow well under walnuts.

I was 15 the first time I had my wive over to our house - obviously not my wife yet. She was disgusted with me and we had our first fight when I cracked a walnut on my brother's forehead. That's how we process them around here.

The final product isn't worth the effort but the final product wasn't the point
