For you marsh trappers, what’s the best, cheapest, easiest, marking stake option out there ? Trying to find 6-7ft fiber glass rods but also not trying to spend an arm and a leg

I cut hazel brush stakes in the summer and let them dry. They get hard as a rock. I cut them as long as I can with a Y at the top. I paint the tops and/or tie flagging on them. I bundle them in groups of 25 so it is easy to keep track of how many sets I put out. I store them in the pole barn and many are 20+ years old.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Indian flag willow, cut in summer and dry. Be SURE to use 'em dry.

Interesting. I just googled Indian flag willow and nothing came up that resembled what I was talking about. It is a term the Indians used where I grew up north of La Crosse. It meant the Willow that was cut from dense thickets on sandbars where because of the density the willow grew tall and straight with no branching. That was what they used and I copied them back in the '60s.

Not only that, but if there are beaver in the area you're going to have a bad day. Muskrats will chew on green willow, but at least they don't play hide and seek with your gear.

Beaver like those willow, too but when they cut them off the sandbars they create sharp, pointed stakes that play heck with boots when walking through them. I still duck hunt and trap those sandbars and have patched boots as evidence!

Clothes pin painted fluorescent orange for marking a set. For staking I have a couple hundred 3/8”x5’ fiber glass rods that can be rat trap stakes, float stakes or for use with Hagz brackets. The clothes pin works great to mark sets if theft is not an issue.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.
