Does anyone here raise quail as a dual-purpose egg-and-meat bird? I've looked at getting some but haven't committed. I've always had a backyard chicken flock and raise meat chickens every year, but I have a couple of empty commercial poultry houses where I could raise a lot of birds if I wanted. What breeds should I look at? What setup style should I use, like large pens or hanging/stackable cages?

I do , there not as hard as eveyone makes them out to be , Keith is you guy but I've tried them in a tractor, a semi mobile pen and not I got some in a lil hutch.
will say the main issue I had is getting them to lay constantly outside of summer . found a mix of gambird crumble and chicken layer crumble and a lil avian calcium keeps them going good .
other then that highly recommended using coated wire if you gonna hve them walkn on it and definitely give them a sand box . bigger the better

Coturnix A&Ms are a good dual purpose bird.
At 7 weeks I usually send the males to market in Chicago (Skokie) IL.
I make my own 5 compartment colony cages, using GQF battery cages as a pattern.
I run a 1 male to 5 female ratio for hatching.

thanks for the great info! I've all the pros of how much they lay, but I have to say I've been skeptical.
