John Denver should have laid off the weed.
It killed him.
He was so stoned he forgot to gas up his plane before going for a spin out over the ocean.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Get it right if you are going to talk about the man. He had problems with alcohol. Maybe a weed user, But the booze was his monkey.

Alcohol Struggles and Legal Issues

• DUI Arrests: Denver faced multiple drunk driving arrests during the 1990s. A July 1997 DUI trial ended in a hung jury, where his defense attorney claimed a thyroid condition affected his blood alcohol test results.
• FAA Grounding: Following his convictions, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) demanded that Denver maintain complete sobriety. When he failed to meet these terms, the FAA revoked his medical certification and pilot's license in 1996.
• Public vs. Private Life: As detailed in discussions on platforms like Reddit, his public persona as a wholesome, nature-loving folk singer contrasted sharply with his private struggles with alcoholism and personal turmoil.

The 1997 Plane Crash and Toxicology

• No Alcohol Involved: On October 12, 1997, Denver died at age 53 when his experimental homebuilt Long-EZ aircraft crashed into Monterey Bay, California.
• Autopsy Results: Post-crash toxicology and autopsy reports from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Denver had no alcohol, drugs, or controlled substances in his bloodstream at the time of the accident.
• Cause of the Crash: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined the crash was caused by pilot error—specifically Denver's difficulty reaching the fuel selector handle behind his left shoulder and an inadvertent application of the right rudder while trying to switch tank

I was out in Colorado Springs the year they banded the foot hold trap,1996 I believe. I was at a sporting goods store getting a 3 day trout license. I told the guy at the counter That I didn't like giving the state of Colorado any money because they banned the foot hold trap. The jerk said "well something had to be done." I pointed at some game heads and rifles behind him and said "those will be next." He said "no way." I Wish I'd got his address I would write him a letter. [my daughter was living there at the time] I haven't been back.

Google sugarcoated it like you did cause he was a celebrity.
He lost too many brain cells from smoking dope in the thin mountain air all the time, and ran out of gas cause he forgot to switch fuel tanks.
Death by the Darwinian razor.
