My vote is, it's Deer if there isn't a catch circle
But I've been wrong before

I want my traps fast. Easy on the critter. Even though very few get released. Fast is your friend. Mud snow slow them down. Fast is better than pan tension. Pan tension is a plus but changes after every catch. Sometimes you will get a fired trap with no clue what happened.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

What type of pan tension are you running. Little pan tension can cause issues sometimes.

Like others have said, it could be a few different things. Are you packing the trap in hard? I think over packing can lead to a lot of toe catches and misses. I see guys hammer down the damp dirt over the levers and the jaws which slow it down a lot especially if it starts getting colder at night.

I'm leaning that way too, especially since it's set on a deer trail.

Eh...wot?

It's packed in yes. Pan tension (other question) is pretty light.

… 4 coiling will automatically increase your pan tension
