Yes, it can, but it is considerably cheaper from a trapping supply dealer.
It is used in a lot of human foods, as well as animal foods. It has some medicinal uses.
The grade usually sold by the trapping suply business is usually food quality.
Adios,

Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, a common organic acid. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is an inorganic base. So... what is sodium benzoate used for in trapping? A preservative?

I use it one pint mixed with one pint warm water per gallon of meat in bait making. It stops the tainting process and preserves the meat. That ratio is a bit high on the SB but I want to be sure..

ADC, sodium benzoate should be a solid. Are you using a pre-mixed solution of it? Otherwise, one pint of solid does seem like a huge amount.

I mix one pint (solid) with one pint of warm water, disolve it well. That will do 2 gallons of bait. Sorry I should of made that more clear.

The usual amount of SB in powered form is: 2 slightly rounded table spoons per pint of bait, and 1 slightly rounded cup per gallon of bait.
