Never owned a pair before, and find myself in need of a pair for trapping. In these parts it gets rather chilly, and I was wondering what the prefered technique is to keep from freezing. Do you buy a larger size that your insulated boots fit in? Seems this could get a little bulky? Just go with a closer fit and some good socks..? I do have some neoprene inserts from another pair of boots that may work as well. What works for you...?

i usually just wear good wool socks in them and regular jeans and long johns. However around here once it gets very cold my water is froze solid as my creeks are slow movers . usually done with liquid water by about the 1st of december.

Get a pair of Polypropoline long johns in the expedition or arctic grade like those sold at Cabela's etc. For the feet layering is the best. I use ladies knee high nylons like socks, under a thin wool sock under a thick wool sock. And you'll still get lumps where your feet are.
Tried Electric sock, but the battery pack doesn't fit too good in the waders.
If I had the money I would start a biz making poly-pro socks. Anybody that uses my idea, I get a taste of the profits.

I wear them 70% of the time on my lines, and Im trapping from a canoe, constantly walking in knee deep water. You should be fine if you combine a pair of moisture wicking undersocks then a pair of VERY good wool socks (I wear an over the knee style designed for flyfishermen). I also use a pair of good thermal long underwear which I usually cover with a pair of sweats and then a pair of heavy cotton, tight weave material pants, specifically, BDUs.


This is a MUST: take a small backpack (kids school backpack) with a change of clothes. It is EXTREMELY easy to fill a boot with 30 degree water, and you will thank me when you put on a dry sock in the cold.

I wear a size 10 and I buy 11 waders. Also, try to find a pair of Prolines. These are the old school ones. I have had a pair of these for almost 10 years. I have destroyed all other brands, including some real expensive ones!

For socks in really cold weather, I use a thin silk liner and a pair of synthetic hiking socks (I am allergic to wool). I also bring extra socks on days I'll be out for a long time. If you feet sweat, change your socks!

lacrosse insulateds, nothing better...20 degrees, chunky ice in the water, and a pair of underarmour leggings with jeans and the boots (wool socks also)...

I prefer the non-insuated, as I wear then constantly but am in the water for usually not more than a minute or two at a time and the insulated ones get hot quick,causing sweating which will get you real cold fast,when you stop sweating. I just adjust for the temp that day as needed,depending on how many underlayers I wear,usually just two good pairs of socks and jeans,if real cold(to me below 10 degrees) I throw on some long jons under the jeans,but don't have much open water anyway by that time.

On your new ones,before using add some extra knee patches and they'll help to preserve your wader life right away.

Also, put one above the knee where you set traps to prevent wear.

I don't trap in waders but have spent many hrs in them.Nothern states I would go with 5mm neo boot foot waders and above 20 degrees 3mm boot foot.You can get them in waist high or chest depending on your intentions.Waist high 3mm from Cabelas around 60 bucks I believe.They only last me around 3 years fishing in the winter and spring but I fish hard and long and often.I always where a pair of sweet pants under mine and do get a size bigger no matter what they tell you--Boot wise that is.

Haven't tried it yet, but I hear folks around here sprinkle a little cayenne pepper in their boots before they pull them on.
Will try it this season, at least once.

If you like Lacrosse hip boots get them NOW. Lacrosse is shutting down their line of all hip boots.

My buyer did tell me though that Keith Winkler is trying to order them buy the ben load. La crosse appearently told my buyer that this will be the only way to get these boots anymore.

A ben is a huge amount. If you can't find them check Winklers "Sterlings" trap supply. He might be the only one carriing them in the future.

Buy the way this is the brand I used for my mixed line. They don't hold scent for the K-9 traps and they keep me dry all the way to the twig and giggle berries in the water.
