Several younger members have ask about colony traps and their usage ... One of the best places to use them are in narrows or pinch points .... Most people use them sucessfully in marshes, but never dream of using them in streams. I use them often when I have a stream that has narrow places ..... This stream is about 12 feet wide but it almost clogged with water weeds .... You will find that the muskrats will swim on the surface in these areas ... so you must use diving sticks to force them to dive just before they get to your trap ...... I place them about 4 or 5 inches from both ends of the trap right at the surface ...... Another good place to use them are at underwater holes that are out in a pond that are not next to the bank .... This photo shows a den entrance that is about 8 feet from shore ... do to the low water level in the pond .... Hope this gives you younger fellows another way to catch a few rats ....... Garry-

thanks...any other pics of the stream? i want to learn more about what mrat territory looks like. water n my boots ..... Muskrat territory is about as varied as there are number of streams, creeks, lakes and ponds. I would say throughout W VA most of your waterways should have muskrats in them .... the big thing is knowing what to look for, when scouting for them. My reccomendation to you would be to start with smaller stream and ponds .... If I have time and the weather conditions are permiting .... I will try and take additional photos tomorrow of some things you might want to look for .... If you have any marshes in your area ... they would be good, but can be either easier or more difficult to trap them .... you can PM me if you have specific questions ....... Garry-

Garry, That is an informative tutorial for those who can use them in their state. They are not legal to use where I am.
Nice post!
Did you make those traps? Are the "multiple catch" attributes of the colony trap efficient enough to not to consider using #110's in those narrow muskrat corridors that you illustrated?
Just curious for those of us who do not have options.

Jonathan Thank you Jonathan .... Yes, I made the traps myself .... they are the folding style ... take up less room in both storage and tranporting them ... I personally believe the multiple catch attributes far outweigh the #110's ... Catching 4 or 5 rats are not at all uncommon in these traps .... (When the rats are moving) ... I have caught as high as 14 rats in one trap at one time, in a considerably larger trap. They also have the advantage that in faster moving water, like in the photo, they don't fire when a leaf or twig hits them. Garry-

They are very effective tools to catch muskrats. Besides being able to catch multiple rats each night, they are also very easy to set. Just lay it down in an underwater channel, and you're done. Yes and they are much easier setting than Body grips ... especially young people that might get their fingers pinched in conibears ... The only thing you have to remember is to make sure they are covered with water ... not covered animals won't drown. .... Garry-
