I take the brand new cheap ones off new traps and replace with HD ones. And if one of those feels weak, throw it away. They are too cheap of a part to take a chance on.

For how cheap they are I never reuse them. Maybe on muskrat traps or something

IF I was going to reuse one I would weld it for my piece of mind

May not be necessary but would definitely make me feel better

Maybe if you were using them for coon or smaller critters they might not fail?

Let's be honest
All J hooks are not created equal
There's more pot metal garbage than is quality
And "Quality only hurts once "

I believe that if you close a j hook (crunch proof) and reopen it the only time i would reuse it for coyotes would be to takweld it

If I reopen it in the trash it goes unless I weld it. Never use anything but crunch proofs. I get some big non targets and I don’t want one leaving with a trap. There are things you can save money on but j-hooks and chain ain’t it. I buy the best I can find.
