Is it southern and northern or eastern and western? Regardless I know the stuff from the east/south/southeast doesn't even smell like castor to me. Totally different smell from a different part of the country.

I'd always heard southern lure/bait guys wanted northern castor for beaver lure. Is that wrong?

It depends on which lure/bait guys you ask. This one prefers southern castor.

Lol. I’ve had good luck with Idaho castor. Used mostly for Oregon Bobcats!!!

Well handled castors is probably the most important part.

I’m not a pro like many here but I make my own. Northern castor works great for Northern beaver.

I might be wrong . . .but it seems that beaver castor seems to change odor based on diet.
And that of course, can be due to different plants and trees grow in different regions.
Beaver that eat a lot of pine seem to have a totally different smell to me.

You're correct. Diet is what causes the different odors in castors. The vast majority of beavers I catch down here eat sweet gum, privet, and small magnolias that grow around streams. Sweet gum tends to be their favorite. Occasionally they'll eat pine, but not often. Whereas up north it's aspen or popple as it's also called. We don't have aspen down here.

Years ago NC got some beavers that where originally from Wisconsin. After eating the diet of sweet gum, their castors smell the same as the other beavers we have here.
