Trap free Montana is now passing around a meme saying that this Carter guy is saying foothold traps were never used on ANY of the wolf reintroduction projects.
Who is this Carter guy?? Anyone know anything about him?

He worked for MT ADC in the 1970-80s that I know of. He was the western part of the state supervisor for MT in the early 1980. Heard he became a bunny hugger. He hauled me ADC coyotes to skin in the early 1980's

Can he speak for ALL of the wolf reintroduction programs?? Or just the Yellowstone one?

Consider the source. Carter trapped wolves with foot traps. Period.

Craig O'Gorman mentioned him in his "Hoofbeats" book as an ADC supervisor.

Footholds and snares…….if they could get to them before they died. The Alberta trappers didn’t care either way so they said that they better check the sets often…..lol
Great book, unless you’re one of those “smoke a pack a day” or “only good wolf is a dead wolf” kinda guys.
He made himself a lot of enemies on both sides of the fence by just calling it like it is. If the truth doesn’t fit someone’s narrative or ideology, they’re wrong or stupid…….the truth hurts sometimes and some people won’t accept it.
He lays pretty low, but I think he’s a true wolfer. He knows his stuff.
I was worried about buying that book as there was a lot of folks that said he was anti trapping and a wolf lover. He’s a normal guy who wants the best management for the species, just like most of us.

When I took the required MTFWP wolf trapping course a state biologist did a demo of the sets they use to trap wolves for research purposes. The trap they were using was a LPC 7 with teeth. She said the teeth allowed the foot to drain instead of swelling up. Everything I’ve read about the introduction of wolves here (and that’s a lot) indicates that all the wolves from Canada were caught with foot hold traps. I wouldn’t believe anything footloose mt has to say.

I remember reading about the wolf introduction early on when it was happening and they were using footholds to catch them.

I wholeheartedly believe that foothold traps were used…no game changer for me personally,,, it’s for those individuals who are still undecided and cold hard proof could help those folks who are still forming opinions.
Benefits trapping as a whole.

Drain what? I can't picture ever using teeth on traps. A good paw catch with a good trap shouldn't cause any problems.

Swelling.... edema ...the small cuts into the paw allow the fluids to exit and allowing a quicker heal time.

David mech advocated the of the 14 newhouse for wolves as the most humane wolf trap for years. 14s 7s and 8lpc with teeth are still used mech even had his own variant of the 14 he used on island royale wolves. This is not a secret or misconception its a fact. Teeth hold the foot secure and allow edema fluid from swelling drain

Lets not pretend carter the liar doesnt make alot more money working for animal rights groups then being a trapper.

Read an article once about teeth on the wolf trap. Guy trapped wolves for reintroduction and for studies and he said the foot sliding back and forth in the jaws caused more serious damage than teeth also

They used traps with teeth in WI when doing wolf research. I believe it was the 14 Newhouse.
