I wanted to share a trick I picked up last year that has been putting alot of coons and some fox on stretchers for me eversince I started using them.
Well one fall day I was fishing for salmon to make coon bait in a small stream at a local golfcoarse. I was walking the creek and spotted a lrg coon working the bank ahead on a sandbar, He was digging and sniffing around when a golfball landed right next to him ! He ran over and picked it up and tryed to eat it! He bit it several times and played with it til the owner came to find it, but it gave me an idea.
Golfballs look like turtle eggs and everyone knows that coons love them!Soooo, I decided to try them in my arsenal for trapping season. I dig a dirthole in a gravel bar along a river ,creek or pond (where turtles like to bury their eggs) and place a couple of balls in the dirthole. I experimented and found although lure helped I got alot without it as well! So after using them for a year I decided to share this with you guys and hope you can use it. It adds great eye appeal to the set and it WORKS.!

Great tip!
Just don't get caught getting those freshly hit balls out on that golf course.....can't imagine a fellow being chased around by grandpa in plaid pants!!

I've used ping-pong balls and had get results, and they are less expensive(just don't last as well and tend to float if the water comes up).

The golf ball set. Drill a hole in it add bait would get them working the set longer if you need that. Thanks for sharing.

On the same visual principle, I have used halves of chicken egg shells as an attractant for both raccoon and red fox for many years. The "cup" in them also serves as a lure holder in a dirt hole set.

I have yet to meet a raccoon that will pass up an "egg" if it has an opportunity to see it, as two of you have noted with the golf and ping pong ball versions.

Neat idea, and obviously more durable than my chicken halves in the long haul. But, my 5 gallon bucket full of shells will last a long time.

I retrieved golf balls from golf course lakes for a living(9 Years). We used to hate getting into a lake with alot of muskrats because they'll chew golfballs down to half their original size.

I use the plastic easter eggs. I get them at Wally world right after easter. They are hinged and have two small holes in each end. I use them in cubbies for skunk and coon.

My dad's old property was all woods and bordered the neighbors bug fallow field. The neighbor used to hit golf balls off of his back porch into that field.

Walking around my dad's woods, deer/grouse hunting or whatever, I used to find golf balls everywhere, hundreds of yards from the field. Many were chewed quite a bit, but not a ton. Looking back on where I found them, I doubt they were all from coons, I think fox picked a lot of them up too.

I think if you just set one on a gopher mound it would get a lot of attention but they may just grab it quick and run off. I wonder if it'd work to drill a hole through the ball and put some kind of spike or anchor in the ball. You could even run the tag end of a cable stake through the hole in the ball and hammer a stop on the end. If you put that stake in the ground and even left a couple inches of slack they would work around even more. Kind of like the old hidden camera shots of the quarter glued to the floor, and the people keep trying harder to pick it up.

Good experiment for a trail cam.
