Yes...about as big as they come 'round these parts.

Someone called it an Indigo.

I always thought they were different
Are they a sub-species?

I always let them go.

Snakes cannot hear. A snake call would be a con.
Adios,

Nope- they are not closely related. The indigo snake http://www.outdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/what/Reptiles/Snakes/eis.cfm Drymarchon corais couperi. While the black rat snake http://lib.oh.us/snake/fact%20pages/rat_snake_black/rat_snake_black.html is Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta. Although the taxonomists have started to recognize a reclassification to Pantherophis alleghaniensis . I suspect all of the rat snakes have been renamed by now. I can't keep up with the taxonomists. The indigo snake is protected in Alabama and most other states where it is found.

Indigo snakes are protected in Georgia.

They are not related to black rat snakes, and it is doubtful that they will be claimed as relatives.

I.E., the indigos have smooth scales, and the rat snakes have keeled scales.

We have been dealing with Rattlesnakes and gophers snakes since the spring. The biggest concern that I have is where people bring in alien species and they get away. I have had to deal with
pythons, boas, Cal. kingsnakes and cornsnakes to name a few. We have had an instance where a cobra escaped into a house and was not found. Fortunately it was the dead of winter and to date the snake has not reappeared. The house remained vacant for months.

What do you call a gopher snake?
I have never heard that name as far north as you are.
Down here that is one of the names given to Gray Rat Snakes.
Some folks call them white oak runners.
Thank You,
45/70,

Were I live is the far northern end of the Senorian Desert. We have all the things that you would expect to see in desert conditions, cactus, 6 species of snakes including rattlesnake and great basin gopher snakes, scorpion and lizards. The Gophersnake resembles a bullsnake and a lot of folks here call them that but thir correct name is a great basin gopher snake.
These guys mimic a rattlesnake when approached. They will suck in air making themselves to look bigger, curl up, shake their tails and hiss at you, which sounds like a rattlesnakes rattle. They are quite agressive and will stike out at you or bite you if given the chance. Big guys will reach up to 4-5 ft in length.

That first snake picture isnt a black rat snake that is shown.Looks more like someones pet boa or python that was thrown in the yard for a photo shoot. The next photo you show with one held with tongs appears to be a black rat snake.

We are doing some snake work now, Been doing structure seals, rodent treatments and going to set some traps later today for captures before they go into their semi dormant behavior which is soon with these cooler temps.Indiam summer if it comes will keep many black rat snakes in these parts active into december in the warmer homes. Then they get lazy for the winter. Many till hunt in homes or get lucky when a mouse runs across them in their lay up spot and they get an easy snack with minimal effort.

Pete, once again Canada takes a back seat to no one when it comes to weird stories. The cobra loose in the vacated house is front page headline material.

Hey there LT :-) Yep Senoran, which runs from Mexico to where we are here. Hottern than all git out in the summer, especially in the valley bottom and can get very cold in the winter.
