Good one, Ray.

It was lol, it was probably staying up on top hibernating and suddenly found itself running out of door to sleep on as it was going down!!! and somehow it got neck caught instead of falling off. i wish i would have got some pics on the other side of the door.

Tips and Tricks from a beginner here.

1. K.I.S.S. it! (Keep It Simple Sam) If I over think it I usually did not catch one last year. Eric keeps telling me to quit thinking so hard and TRAP!

2. See number 1

If you do get some grizz, If you see a coon track or two slap a grizz in. If you see a place where it just looks coony, slap a griz in.

I am starting this year off with Eric teaching me about blind sets etc. I got spoiled early by the grizz.

BARRY RIGGIN IT WITH BARRY LEROY! GO FOR IT!

I may not put up large #'s around 100 a yr set a lot off trail snares and dirt holes.Use moonshine diluted in spray bottle and make trailing set.At agiven time may have up 30 snares in a given area for up to a wk.Have to move as the cattle are moved so hit it hard while cattle are in the area so can run line while cking cattle.Set most off my snares around 7 inches off ground with a chin up stick large loop.Usually large coon are caught and loop is big enough to get yotes. If there are cats in area I will hold of till cat season to run snares.

Here are a couple of my better locations where I set dry land dirtholes. They are near the water and catch those big boars.

Nice spot for a blind set here. The vertical bank and shore force them down to the water or up to the dirtholes:

Another great spot, 2 logs that cross the creek. End will be guarded by 2 dirtholes:

Here is another good spot for a blind set. The depression in the sand is where the coon are jumping onto the dirt off the log. BAM!

A levy that borders a runoff pond and a large harwood flat. The coon really run this high trail:

Would anyone mind telling me how they are successful on dirtholes for coon. I have had at least 2 snapped traps thelast 4 days and their is coon hair on the jaws.

Bones check your pan tension may be a little light and snaps b-4 they have there weight down .Don't cover the trap to deep in bed, try a step down hole set

I don't do anything special really. Block up the hole to narrow down the approach a little, I use a stick about finger width and length as a jaw guard, and just drop the trap in. My pans have about 1lb. or so of tension, pulled down to hair trigger.

I do worry more about bedding than with k9 trapping. Coon have sensitive little fingers and if the trap moves at all, he filters through the dirt til he finds it. Be sure you bed solid and pack inside the jaws too. The only soft spot should be right on the pan.

how far back do you set your trap from the hole? does it matter or do they walk around it enough?
