do you have to have a tail zipper to skin coon, fox, etc. I'm pretty new at this and am trying to get my ducks in a row.

i actually use a scalpel for this, just start at the vent and carefully make a cut down the tail trying to keep your cut centered on the tail bone.
when the tail bone is exposed i work it free near the vent and insert a wood dowel between the tail fur and the tail bone.
I then work the dowel down the length of the tail being carefull at the end not to pop off the end of the tail.
otter are quite a bit tougher and its alot more cutting and less pulling but youll get it

Roofing "hook blades" work too.

Just use a knife. I have done about every type of fur animal you can think of with a pocket knife an one time ore another.

No, you don't. But if your doing a bunch of coon or fox it does make a quicker job.
