You will never catch all coons on the neck every time. I set 6-7" high with an open hand size loop. I will block them down if the trail allows. The size of coons varies greatly so there is no "perfect" answer. The archives will give you some tips.

This was discussed early fall this year and alot agree that they can be hard to consistantly neck snare due to the variance in size. I know a guy that uses a 4 inch loop about 1 inch off the ground and says that is how he does it. And, yes, I would agree that more blocking would be necassary but I think the others here like Lt. Grey,ADC,Opposum Skinner,Newt, etc. would be valuable in their ideas. If you are snaring grass tunnels in marshes it is easier then having to block down trails a lot of my snaring is grass tunnels and crawl unders so far it is working good on coons and greys 4-5 X 4-5 a little larger and higher I start catching red fox HTH

You won't consistently get a neck catch. There is just too much difference in coon size. Also add into the equation terrain. Have a good 1 just

If you set your small loops just the right height off the ground you'll neck snare all the coons you catch. I'd start with a 5" loop and set it 6" off the trail. Use an agressive non relaxing lock with fast loaded cable and you should neck snare most all the coons you catch, and with the right locks they won't work the loop either on farther or off themselves.... That said you'll miss ALOT of coons, get many knocked down snares, avoid any fox, and be all around disgusted with the results on the sets where the coons weren't just the right sized or chose not to play be the rules.
For me I just choose to use the right cable and locks and set-ups to avoid as much snare mark as possible and target them right behind both front feet on the 2x or bigger coons I target.

Here comes some heresy, but I just don't think a snare is a very good tool for coon trapping. Too many more good alternatives. You were doing god up til that line. lol A snare is the prefect tool to use to catch snares on parts of my line. There are places where I could set nothing else. Since my fur buyer does not dock me for the faint marks my snares leave on the pelts I see no reason not to use them. You have to realize your talking to a whole world of trappers on here. Many have very different situations than others, so a blanket statement like that, while true for you may not cover everyone. I have locations through thin grass where a 220 would never work, its high profile so dog proofs are out, prone to loose pets so foot holds are not a good option, if I passed on all those locations my catch would be way down. ~ADC~

You don't use kill poles? It looks like you would run out of trail after a few catches.
