I recently put up 2 coyotes and just noticed a rotten smell from the ears and the fur on them is slipping. I know its probably to late to do anything to these but is there any way to save these? Also I have another one in the freezer im gonna put up pretty soon and he was my first so I don't wanna mess up on his ears, so what do you do to keep them from slipping? Thanks alot I appreciate it.

You have to take the cartilidge out of the ears all the way to the tip. Same as you would for a fox.

I trim the ear butts but I have never completely removed the cartilage from the ear of a fox or coyote in over 30 years.

So Bic do you just cut out the bulk of the cartilage at bases and leave the rest?

Are you going to have these tanned or sell them on the fur market? If going to sell just let them go ahead and dry out. It will stop slipping and smelling when completely dried and a little taint around the ear is not going to ruin a garment pelt.

YEP. Then Keep a fan on the pelts to dry them good.
Just by chance...did you wash those Yote hides then possibly board them before the fur was completely dry?

If all else fails, use a little borax on them. It will stop the spoiling.

There is a good article about this in the last Trapper Post.

It is common when they are washed. Trim off fat meat and some cartilage. Put a little borax on them and they should be good to go. I used to split them too when working in a skinning room. I ran them through a washing machine and they get alot of water between the hide and cartliage in the ears. Fans will help too.
