I have been using fine livestock salt for years. Does the rock salt work better i have never tried it?

Any salt should be fine, that's just what I have around. It's pretty cheap.

fine salt works better in warmer weather. Cool or cold weather rock salt is fine. I have some pics, gimme a minute. I will start a new thread so as not to hijack Lt's post.

We have all these carp fish down here in Mo--would those be good to chunk up as well?--We pumped tenderquick into one of those type carp that jump in your boat--silver or asian- and smoked it lightly w/ some cherry and hickory wood-It was very good
wouldnt take many for a mess,w/ the size of some of them

These are Gizzard Shad, what we here call mudshad. They are pretty big as mudshad run, chunks were about 2-3 inches thick.

I knew I had about 50 or so lbs to salt so I hacked each of em into 3 or 4 pcs about as big as your hand or smaller. I rolled them in fine salt so they were covered all way round and packed them into a barrel.

Don't add water as they will make their own brine and don't drain the brine off either. Just cover tightly and keep out of the sun.
Carp will work okay, just watch the thickness of the pieces. Salting bait is an old traditon and skill here in tidewater. Most all the trotline crab bait is still salted today to make it last in hot weather.

Most any fish will work, I like these because they are very oily.

salt is the preservative. anything else you are adding is just costing you. the salt will do all the preserving. the glycerine or glycol is used to keep smells from evaporating. for instance you would put glycerine in urine to keep it from evaporating at a set. i wouldn't put anything else in with the fish to preservive it.

I have personally held them for 2 seasons. They will sometimes get a yellow color but I have never seen it turn off anything that would eat them fresh. You can always throw some in fresh water overnight and they will come back from the semi-dried salted state. The brine they make is an excellent attractor as well.
If the barrel or buckets get rained in your work is ruined. Keep them sealed and shaded.

I have three five gallon buckets of salted carp that are two years old. Used one this year for coon bait and worked as good as when it was fresh.

Does anyone salt grinded fish? I have thought of stuffing panty hose (sausage style) with grinded fish and salting it the same as chunks and fillets?? Just a thought...
