How about it dnew, riverotter2, or how about LT? It would be nice to keep this going.

I'll give pic support to anyone who needs it. Just email your pics to me and I'll upload them... pdobbins@nc.rr.com

If I didn't mention someone else who may have something to share, don't be shy.

Jackie started it week before last. He took pictures of a day on the line with him. I told him he should do it all week, and that I would do it the following week if he did. He did.

I then did it Mon - Thurs of last week.

Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4

Buzzy, you could do this also if you want...

How many have ever wondered what it would be like to spend a day on the line with someone we have viewed here on Trapperman.Com ?

Perhaps a day on the beaver line in Carolin'...or a day in the Bayou country with Tony Howard? Maybe a day on the Pennsylvania fox line with Phil Brown or the windy ridges of Wyoming, with Cattrax.
Up in the great white north catching weasels with 2-poor or one of our many Alaskan or Canadian Trappers?

Out in Iowa, on the mink line with Nick C. or J.C. Conner on his Texas 'cat and coyote line?
Any who wouldn't want to run all over the country with Andy S. just once? laugh

The point I'm trying to make is, most of us will never get that chance, so I hope for those of us that have wondered what it would be like to spend a day out on the line from start to finish, that some of you will take the time to share a typical day on your line with the many viewers of Trapperman.com.
( Photos are welcome, but not totally nessasary .)

OK, from todays line:

I awoke to the sound of wind howlin' outside the window.
After a few minutes laying there in the dark, I reached over and fumbled along the window seal, until I hit the button on the weather radio.

"...and at the airport, it is 1 degree with a windchill of minus..."

I hit the button again...
It didn't matter at that point what the windchill was...
Below 0, it's all the same!
It was 6:13 am.

After a getting dressed in the two (of the three) layers I would be wearing, I downed some eggs and toast and went out to brush off the snow and start the truck.
We had had a 6" snowfall, yesterday and the temps had dropped overnight. Except for the drifting snow, things didn't seem too bad. Regardless, it makes for a slow day.
I pulled out at 7:30.

I receive many PMs from trappers wanting to know how I snare in winter conditions, so I've enclosed some pictures of the sets, both with catches and the snares set themselves.

Snare sets at ambush points!

I had out about 119 snares, which may sound like a lot to some, but I set heavy and gang set a good many locations that I have baited over time.

This peticular line, I had taken quite a number of coyotes from it already, but still managed to take some more today and 1 raccoon in a cage trap set in a farmer's barn.

Except for the one mishap of nearly turning the truck over an embankment, in which I put it in reverse, held on tight, held my breath and gunned it backwards, I was able to run the line without much trouble.

A few shots from the line!

I did have to walk in on this peticular area because of heavy drifting snow, but the farmer and his daughter were out feeding cattle and were nice enough to give me and the 3 snared coyotes,(and a cage trap) I had back there a lift back to the pick-up. Sure bet dragging them, no doubt!

( Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!) laugh

By the time I finished, it was about 5 PM and I had taken 8 coyotes and had traveled 91 miles round trip.
I spent $30. in fuel. The temps still made for a long day.
In a few weeks, I hope to be south chasin' stubbtails, but for now, it's cold weather and coyotes!

Now to get a few of these animals thawed out.... wink

Thanks for comin' along!

I aint no Dobbins or Bushmaster Malone ... just boring ol' me

The hardest part of my day is deciding which plaid shirt I'm gonna wear ... and more often than not I wear the same shirt two days ... so talk about living the easy life wink

Day #1 Last Thursday I went and checked out a beaver job, had to travel about 48 miles ... I have been there before ... this is a good size pond only a few hundred yards away from a river ... it get's frequent trasient visitors ... the guy said he had been seeing two beavers in the pond ... and he had seen them just the night before ... beavers really did some damage along the river a while back and cut quite a few trees around a portion of the pond

Checking things out, I did't see or notice a lot of obvious new sign ... but then again, that doesn't mean much all the time ... I did find a couple freshly peeled sticks and going by what I was told ... assumed they were there

I put in 5 sets, three foot traps and two bodygrips

Set #1 ... used a TS-85 on a long chain here (water depth is marginal for drowning) (in the picture you'll see a 750 on a rod, this was switched out for a 85 on a chain because of water depth and anchoring) ... no castor, instead I used my homebrew "sweet springtime" food lure and a couple small peeled sticks (after I took the picture I actually added a small bait limb up behind the lure ... with the light underside of the leaves showing towards the approach)

Set #2 ... used another TS-85 on a drowner cable (water depth is marginal for drowning but got beaver out into water) ... the beavers had been using this spot as a crawl out on the hut , but not overly or recently ... this spot was too perfect for my likings to not set it ... the log is natural (I didn't put it there) and really aids in guding ... also lured this one with peeled sticks and my "sweet springtime" food lure

Set #3 ... used a MB-750 on a drowner rod here ... freshened up a old spot I had used months ago ... just slicked it up a lil ... no lure on this one, just a single small peeled stick

"sweet springtime"

Sets #4 and #5 are 330 bodygrips set in a deep channel that goes from a shallower end of the pond to the larger end ... usually always good for a beaver or two

this is how I like my 330 triggers (and yes it's a Duke)

Day #2 (Friday) ... first check ... no beavers, nothing in the foot traps ... just turtles in the 330's

Day #3 (Saturday) ... second check ... again, no beavers ... just turtles

Day #4 (Sunday) ... third check ... trying my patience, but what's new ... no beavers

and only a couple more sliders

no pics

Day #5 (Monday) ... fourth check ... finally, one beaver in a foot trap (TS-85) ... one TRIPPED but empty TS-85 ... one snapper and one slider

this male beaver fell for set #1

remake of set #1 after the catch ... for the remake, I lured it with a lil mud and my hombrew castor lure "headache"

Day #6 (Tuesday) ... fifth check ... no beavers, only one turtle ... a beaver bypassed set #3 by only inches and went right up beside it (he even stole the bait limb from the side) ... oh well, aint the first time, wont be the last

slapped in a new set right where he plowed up and left a lil debris ... for this set I used a MB-750 on a long chain ... lured with my "headache" castor lure

Day #6 (Tuesday) ... fifth check ... nothing in the foot traps ... one turtle

no pics

Day #7 (Wednesday) ... sixth and last check ... new set put in beside old set #3 connected with a large female beaver ... yeee ha grin ... also picked up a couple more turtles ... pulled all traps from this location
