as far as i know, it only comes in one color..as a powder its red, turns black in the water.
  with time, it will come off in the water i guess, i dunno, i only do land traps with it.

but its still necessary, i think.  i know at least one pro trapper, who catches alot of animals, only cleans then waxes.  but, for me, my traps have to at least start dyed, but eventually wears off.

Yes, clean, dye, and then wax.
  Clean - some like to use Sani-flush (do not add to hot water) or stuff like that, I usually use some dish detergent and boiling water for awhile, then hit with a power washer.
  Dye - log wood dye and let simmer right at or just over boiling for an hour or a little more, then let them dry
  Wax - fill a galvanized bucket or something with enough wax to fully submerge your trap, cable stake, chain, drag, whatever, leave the trap in for at least 30 seconds to maybe a minute - long enough for the trap to get hot.  Remove from wax, give it a shake or a swing and hang to dry.
  You should put a nail between the jaws for the whole process so they get coated with dye and wax.
