We had the usual cold snaps and associated equipment malfunctions that aren't always fun but that time seemed to go faster than the later part which was better weather and daylight.

We are getting pretty close here as well. It takes a long time for 38" of ice to go away without a huge east-wind blow.

We saw our first swallows yesterday which used to be a sign there were kings in river but doubt if that holds true anymore. Here is yesterdays sunrise with big wind cloud over MT Puelik. Unusual 40mph NNW wind for this time of year. Sure is nice to have other people in here but we may have talked them to death by now.

Ice broke this morning in front of here this morning and ice chunks started flowing afterwards. The ice chunks on the beach that got pushed up were way smaller than I expected. We'll see in a couple days if bigger chunks come on down. Boating soon now

I passed algebra by the skin of my teeth. It will be a cold day on the equator before I do that again! Got the boat up and running this week with the new motors on. Good power and plenty fast but lost a little steering at low speed after having to go from a single steering cylinder to a two cylinder set up. Got some T-man terrors coming here in early July to load up the freezers. Looking forward to meeting someone besides Hup...

I troll quite a bit, and do a little drifting and jigging, and of course anchor up once in a while for halibut. I shut one down for trolling. The new engines don't foul out like the older ones at low speed so it works out good. I had 225's on it before and it felt a little underpowered, especially climbing big swells. I was going to go with 250's but they had a sale on and I could get the 300's for the same price. Quite a few guys run the 300's here and get much better fuel economy over the 250's. On my break in runs I couldn't go past 4000 rpm (3/4 throttle), but was cruising at 32 mph. I think my best cruise for fuel will be around 25 mph and 3500 rpm's- weather permitting. Always room on the boat for visiting T man-ers!

Saw your ship in. You guys are underway a lot these days! I won't have a slip until June 1 then it's game on. The boat is a bit of a pain to trailer due to being oversized. Be careful out there!

Very nice. Who built it? Lot to be said for those large outboards other than economy. Got enough speed to outrun weather at 30mph cruise. I have two 454 inboards on a 32 footer similair to yours only a landing craft and my best cruise is 3200 rpm and 32-34mph.

Any pics of your boat UB? Having grown up on SW and spent time in boats in both SW and SE I just love seeing pics of the stomping grounds. My wife don't know it yet but we're gonna retire to the boonies, be it in one of those 2 places...course that's a long ways off for this youngun!

Thanks! The builder's name is Jon Nichols from Warrenton Or. He has a company called PIC-NIC Welding. He built guide boats for the Columbia River area. This was a demo boat that he built in 2005 and ran for a couple of years guiding sturgeon and salmon. I saved up my pennies, got my 6 pac and bought this boat in 2007 to start my post retirement dream job chartering here in Kodiak. The year after I bought it and started my business, the Feds came out with the halibut IFQ plan for charter operators. I didn't qualify for a permit- based on my date of entry into the fishery. Really a rotten deal for me and about 180 other charter operators here. Halibut was 90% of my business, so rather than pay the high insurance and deal with all the hassles to try to salvage an unsalvagable business, I folded and now just fish for fun. I had motor issues last year that kept me off the water most of the summer, so once again I bit the bullet and bought the new motors. I may have to get my wife a third job...

Heck with a boat like that you gotta have alot of freinds Sucks about the charter thing,but with the wife working a third job for motor and gas bill it will let you get out more

My real conundrum is that a lot of my friends also have boats, and it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to sell this one and fish with them! All those cliches about owning a boat are true! But it is fun...
