No air rifle is suitable for dispatch, a .17 pellet only weighs 8-10 grains.

. The guns that I have fired account for better than a 60% loss of hearing in one ear and probably 30% in the other. Paul, hadn't hearing protection been invented yet during your youth? I grew up in the 60's-70's and my dad always made us wear plugs or muffs........... just saying... and picking on you....

There was no protection offered even in the combat engineers in the early sixties. Besides the gunfire, we used 3.5 rocket launchers, C-4, and dynamite, all without ear protection. Your dad should be thanked for his foresight. lost 60% of my left ear hearing in the last couple years due to explosives and gunfire. use hearing protection on the range, but its still hard to use in a firefight. I'm only 24, I think I need to be a little more careful.

I have used an RWS model 48 in 22 cal and it is a workhorse. You can pick them up used usually for between 2 to 3 hundred. Benjamin makes a model called a Trail all weather that Gander Mtn. sells on sale for 200 that has a shrouded barrel and his very accurate and quiet. It has a terrible trigger that can be replace for 35 dollars. If you have the money the Benjamin Marauder with its shrouded barrel adjustable trigger 8 shot magazine is tough to beat. I would also consider the Marauder pistol. It is not really a pistol its 18 inches long and comes with a mountable stock. I would do that then you will have a short light weight rifle with all of the advantages of the rifle. It hits a little less hard but the ability to shoot quicker in sensitve environments is worth it. Then I would pay a little more for unleaded pellets so you can use that as a selling point where food items may be present.
