Drill 1/2 inch holes with a hammer drill, probably 3 or 4 on either side and put 1/2 inch rebar down about 2 feet and leave 4 feet out of the ground. Go to Lowes and buy 2 4ft sonotubes and fill them full of concrete, but be sure to install 2 eyes before you pour the concrete. After it sets up take off your forms and run a cable accross.
it is not a stupid question if you do not know the answer

Thanks for the ideas everyone I talked to an old buddy today that has been in heavy concrete construction for years . He also said to drill a few holes for some rebar so it can't be moved horizontally and put a large sonotube over it, set the post where we need and ... fill it up with concrete ! Anybody have any better ideas that worked for you ?

Rent or borrow a dump truck, and buy a couple of boulders from a quarry or maybe free from an excavater co, and drop them where needed, attach chain/cable to that.

Hey - these $40 post holes - are they guaranteed not to interfere with my water line? -cuz I need a couple for a big gate and if I make my own I might hit the water line.
