I know an older fellow that has some property where people have started dumping out trash. Lots of it! . He has asked me to help him put up some kind of gate or cable to stop the access. This ground is very rocky. It looks like solid rock on one side. How do you get a post hole in the ground without using heavy equipment. It is somewhat near Hot Springs if that helps with they type of ground.
I thought about using a hammer drill ( no power, would have to bring in a generator )
and drilling holes in the rock and bolting a plate to the rock ?? What works for you guys ?

Catching one or two dumpers will not stop the problem either. More will find the area and it will start again.

If you have ever put up a gate post in or on solid rock let me know what worked for you . Thanks

Kinda reminds of this problem my dads friend had with people running over his mail box every month . My dad welded him up a special mail box post that had a real wide base around the post . This made his mail box post real steady and rock solid . The problem with it when the guy came by to run it over again this base came out of ground and got wedged under the vandals car . It ended up causing massive damage to the under side of the car . The vandals car needed towed away . A reg post was installed after that and never got ran over again . Maybe you could make some cement pliers and run a chain between them as a gate . Maybe gather up rocks and Mortor them together into a post .

Drill 1/2 inch holes with a hammer drill, probably 3 or 4 on either side and put 1/2 inch rebar down about 2 feet and leave 4 feet out of the ground. Go to Lowes and buy 2 4ft sonotubes and fill them full of concrete, but be sure to install 2 eyes before you pour the concrete. After it sets up take off your forms and run a cable accross.

it is not a stupid question if you do not know the answer

Can you drill into the rock and get a bolt pattern, then pack quickreet under the base plate? Then you only need to fill the holes with Hilti and a bolt. Make sure you blow and scrub the holes though, or it wont hold well. Ive put up steel building frames this way.You an use a cordless roto hammer, I use it for pre drilling holes for earth anchors when I trap coyotes.

Thanks for the ideas everyone
I talked to an old buddy today that has been in heavy concrete construction for years . He also said to drill a few holes for some rebar so it can't be moved horizontally and put a large sonotube over it, set the post where we need and ... fill it up with concrete !
Anybody have any better ideas that worked for you ?

Friends had similar vandalism issues, they hung cable with no trespass sign and camera watching it all. Got nice pics of vandals and turned them over to law. People didn't learn and came back after camera, luckily they had second cam watching first. Sheriff didn't just talk to them on second visit.

Just hire some cattle guards. That's what the wolf huggers tell us, we need more cattle guards.

I need to add something to Pesky's post. If you do something strong enough to break the snowplow that has been killing our mailbox for the last ten years, think again. The property that your mailbox is on, belongs to the state or county. They will sue you butt to fix their snowplow, and win!

Rent or borrow a dump truck, and buy a couple of boulders from a quarry or maybe free from an excavater co, and drop them where needed, attach chain/cable to that.

Hey - these $40 post holes - are they guaranteed not to interfere with my water line? -cuz I need a couple for a big gate and if I make my own I might hit the water line.
