I have some new permission on property with no streams or ditches to really speak of. There are tons of coon tracks in the area, especially around an old vacant farmhouse on the property. I do have a dozen or so buckets sets I'll use in the area, but I have a bunch of #1.5 coils that I'd hate to just leave sitting in the shed.

My question is does anyone use dirtholes to target coons? If so, do you do anything different than a dirthole for k9s? How about any other dryland foothold sets for these bandits?

Dirtholes and flat sets are effective for coons. There's really no difference other than bait/lure used.

I use the exact same sets that I do for fox. A dirthole and a scent post near by with a squirt of fox urine and a dab of fox gland lure.

It takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile, but only 3 for a proper trigger squeeze.

probably caught half my coons last year on dirt holes. If your on location they dont have to be very noticable. There nose will lead them there.

Sometimes it is hard to keep them out of dirtholes!
Meat, fish or sweet should do the trick. I like large backing where/when I can. I think it gives them something other than the trap to focus on.

i've had problems with them setting on their back feet, reaching over the trap into the hole with their front feet, and not get caught. something to think about.

Double dirt hole. Lure or stinky bait in one hole & dry dog or cat food in the other hole.
The 2 holes makes them dance around more & the dry kibble they have to reach in a bunch of times to get it all. Oh, I trail out some of that dry food so they can get a taste.

Hope this helps!

make your dirt hole fairly deep and use fish oil, you will also pick up a few greys. Also I catch a lot of coon on dry land in blind trail sets. You cant miss a coon trail when you come across one. It looks like a deer trail but it is a tunnel with the higher weeds still standing.

Hmmm, Every time I set by a tree like that in the picture above, I always nab them by the back feet, and they destroy the stupid tree and get away.
Even using stepping debri to make em step where I want, no avail, hind feet. I think its because there haunching up on there hind feet to get onto the tree?? And blam, hind foot....and gone!! (sometimes not always)...
Have to remember that pic next time im by a tree!!

Beautiful catch by front foot by the way...

LOL OOOHHHH, rub it in LOL. OHHHHH that gets my goat, wow cant believe that. Ok, im on a mission on saturday.

I got the little boogers in my trap sight now. Well, I have lost some due to that though, not all. But do they tear up some trees, natural little debarkers.

Hmmm, WalkonWater, is that a #2 coil spring? And is that a #11 double LS there PA skinner?? Maybe I need to get off my
1-1/2 CS??

Around a farm house, try this:
Crescent shaped backing of dirt. Stick a Shiny white golf ball in the dirt inside the crescent at the bottom so about half is sticking out and it can only be seen from one side. Squirt some lure on that side as well (whatever lure you want - urine works too)... Bed trap about 4 to 6 inches from the golf ball.

You got coons that play golf in Ohio? \:\)

I've used broken egg shells the same way, put the dirt over it so it looks like a whole egg partially buried.

Yeah, eggs work just great. The golf ball is eye apeal. Stands out at night. Shinier than an egg. No golfing that I have seen but they might... never know...
