Been having some trouble with a red squirrel job, which is not that unusual.

I know we are on location as the homeowner has seen the squirrels run right by the traps. We have tried our usual tricks,(citrus, walnut based, pine nut based, etc.) and I am looking for some additional tips.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Try a salted red meat in a weasel box of they don't
Have to be kept alive! And in the box nobody
Knows what's going on but you! Seems like the change
From a cage to a wooden box intrigues them!

I've been hitting them pretty good this past week with Victor snap traps and peanut butter.

Caught 2 last week in a Koro with peanut butter. Weasel boxes work great for me on stubborn ones. They can't resist checking out the hole.

I keep whole black walnuts on the truck if baited set is only option . The sight of the walnut the pine squirrel will have no choice but to go get it and place it with the rest . First plan would be to repair all the holes but one .place two aes excluder traps set in line so you have two flap doors making a multiy catch trap system . Set the trap screwed over the hole or use some foam to hold in place .

If it is a structural problem we do squirrels much the same as we do bat work. Find the entry points, nose cone with a colony trap and if its after young rearing time the job will be clear in 3-4 days usually.Seal the house and its over.

Never had a red squirrel that we couldnt catch with our baited set up when that is the circumstance of a non structural population reduction control situation.A small chunk of corn suspended in the rear of the cage, nutcracker bait and our trailing scent.

i caught 8 this winter using bacon grease with molasses and sardines mixed in. My biggest problem was them stealing the bait without getting caught in the traps. My son figured out what was happening though, they grab the bait with their paws and the little beggars are able to get out of the way before it trips.

Did a fair amount of red squirrel work when I was in business.Near always there were Black walnut,and/or pine trees near by.By far the best bait in cages was Black walnut.Fresh ,not roasted, not salted, just the fresh nut.Used to buy a pound for about $7 if I remember correctly.Caught several hundred over the space of 5 or 6 years.

I only saw one guy pipe up that it isn't the bait. Why rush to the bait?

what kind of traps hav you tryed. i would use 110s or snare if killing them is allowed. just set them where the reds are running past you other traps . rat traps work too. if wanted removed alive a small cage would work with pb on pan or you could try a # 0 foot hold.
