I've had 2 calls in the last week that turned out to be a female coon with babies. Both sets of babies looked like they were only a week or so old. In 20 years of ADC work this is latest I've ever seen babies this young. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder what is causing the females to give birth so late. Did they loose the first litter(nursery)and mate again? Hmmmmmmmm.

for years I tell guys always check the coon or watch the behavior of that coon, if they are trying to chase it out or exclude them. the latest I have had pups with closed eyes is Sept, but is so common that I always check for young. one key of young in a attic this time of year for me is the coon are there every day. by mid June my sows that gave birth back in March /April are hit and miss on the dens. they take the young out for training and will come back to the birthing den 3 to 5 days spend a day and be gone again. My males are always on a 5 to 10 or 8 to 10 day circuit depending on the age. so if I have a customer that tells me this time of year the coon has been in the attic every day for the past 3 or 4 weeks I just assume there may be little ones. also if they tell me a lot of the birds are chattering alot well you know! lol the only thing written in stone in this work is there is nothing written in stone.

Just one of Mother Natures many quirks I guess. She doesn't seem to care about what we think we know.

Some sows get bred on schedule with the norm of what we consider typical breeding season time. Then some abort birthing mid pregnancy due to a physical traumatic reason or another or due to an environmental impact in their lives. Then others can litter and have the pups killed, the den site invaded or they are driven out of their selected nest site due to some (X) unknown factor.

Once they have had the opportunity to recover emotionally and physically in a few weeks or months later nature kicks in and they come in (heat) season once again. Then some lucky boar coon detects her phermonal scent trail which tells him she is in the mood and runs her down and there you go. Late or off season litters come about.

C'mon guys. This is kindergarten stuff. So I'm going to treat you like four and five year olds.

Teacher: Okay boys and girls; How come Mrs. Raccoon won't let Mr. Raccoon anywhere near the baby raccoons?
Class: Because if she does, Mr. Raccoon will try to kill the babies.

Teacher: Very good class; And why does Mr. Raccoon want to kill the babies even if they are his own children?
Class: Because if he kills them all, Mrs. Raccoon will come into heat again and he can breed her.

Teacher: Excellent class; And what happens if Mr. Raccoon successfully breeds Mrs. Raccoon.
Class. Mrs. Raccoon will have another litter and this one can be really, really, late. They may not even make it through the winter.

Teacher: That was a wonderful dissertation on raccoons and I'm going to give the entire class an "A". Anything else?
Class: Most men are pigs; Raccoons and a lot of other furbearers, outstanding PIGS!

I was just trying to see if anyone else was seeing newborns this late, and start a conversation. But if this is the kind of reply I can expect, I'll just keep to myself. I really don't need an education from you. It must be a real burden to be so much smarter than everyone else. My first and last post. KMA

AnimalPro1, this was not directed at you. We are here to answer all questions. I should have mentioned that before I posted. It's questions like yours that keep this forum hopping.

I guess some times my humor ain't so humorous. As far as being smarter than everyone else, it's a lead pipe cinch that you haven't talked to my wife. If you promise to ask more questions, I promise to try to be funnier.

Dave, the neighbor girl has a litter too. The only female raccoons that don't have a litter are lesbians. I've seen a lot of car-killed raccoons in the past, but nothing like this year.

It's alright Paul. My sense of humor is much better in January than it is in late July.Dealing with the general public for this long has me a little thin skinned. I guess a little levity can do us some good while we wait for those darn baby bats to start flying.

I'll keep asking dumb questions and you can keep giving dumb answers and we'll keep everyone laughing.
