The bats I've dealt with have all been big and little browns. Can anyone recognize what bat makes this sound. The bats were in the firebox above the damper, so all I could see was guano. They were very loud with a almost electronic static sound and very loud.

Will swifts and bats inhabit the same chimney? There is guano accumulated on top of the damper. That is why I thought it was a bat.

Regardless of the chimney swifts, bats will not be found in a chimney with a slick flue tile. Flue tile chimneys are a death trap for bats. They can't crawl back out.

So that's what wasted time sounds like. That's really annoying.

We recently had bats going down the chimney to the first joint from the top. The mortor was missing and they were climbing through the gap. An occasional bat would fall down to fireplace.

That is certainly a situation that would provide a good roost area. I've done a few chimney exclusions where they were entering the cracks/gaps in the crown and would roost in the space between the flue tiles and bricks.

Had one a few years back in an old mill house, four rooms around a central fireplace. The chimney was the old unlined brick flue. There were bats entering the home via the attic but the entry was the open chimney top. While the upper portion og the chimney was still somewhat intact and had been repointed at some point in it's recent history the mortar joints below inside the attic were a whole nother story. I could read the news from the light streaming in from all the missing mortar. I took the job on one condition, I extracted a promise from the owner to have that deathtrap hauled down at the same time the next new roof was installed which looked to be needed immediately.

Yep, textbook swift sounds, and ditto all the above about bats in chimneys. Actually, chimney exteriors are some of the best bat entries.

Recently had an inspection of noisy chimney- swifts AND a wayward bat in the firebox. Check out http://www.frontlineanimalremoval.com/bat-removal-kent-ohio/ for pics and description.

We thought it unusual enough to blog about it.
