I am by no means a pro, but I made boxes like the one pictured and have been testing them with awesome results. I believe I am going to put the hammer down on the old river coons this year grin

Should be lots and lots of new 'coon baits this year.
With all the NEW DP traps coming out,and prices high last season, the war on 'coon will be tremendous !

Pesky, how long are you gonna make us wait to find out? I am guessing mint or peppermint leaves or something.

I found out accidentily that it is one of the best urines for post type sets for K9. I'd take a corn stalk that had been picked, bend it in half facing my trap bed, fill the top with urine and let it soak in, let hang back down. Completely blend in your set. They can't resist marking their territory against a competitor!

9 times out of ten it's big males too...
Back to coon...what I look for when scouting:
Rogue trees, cluster of trees around corn, great trails, and sign... grin

Nice pics Jason! quick question.....is that a no passing zone sign in the middle of a field? laugh

Gotta live up to the nickname...

so got a greenhorn question.. Trapping for coon is year round here and was wondering if maybe I should set a few traps before the actual season hits off just to get the hang of how to trap for the coon.. I would use catch pole to release after i was done.. not sure if this is a viable idea or not.. opinions?

i would rather prebait them and get them coming to your set location. thats what i would do.

never make someone a priority when they make you an option !

You only live once, so get over it!

Tactics may change but the goal remains the same.

I wouldnt just because I dont like to educate animals that I am trying to go after later. If you want to make mock/prebait sets(no traps, just dirt or a gametrail camera) to see if you get action go for it.

I bought a dozen as well on sale, I put a heavier chain and an extra swivel on them, plan to use them in pocket sets, they are pretty stout little traps, I can't imagine they won't hold coon just fine.

Same here.
I've held 50 lb beaver in them by the front foot.
Accidental catches of course...

I Havent done all that much coon trapping, but te best bait that i have tried so far is old rotten fish. you just set a minnow trap and dump all the minnows into a 5 gal bucket, adding more everyday untill you have enough, then you let it set till you start trapping. i do this process in late summer.
