Back at the cabin, I hung the big gray to skin but somehow have caught my second wind even after being up for 28 hours. Still ahead of the storm, I figured I'd better get back out and finish checking the line. Stoked the fire, put the water in the cabin and on up the line

Behind the cabin I have 5 cubbies in a little over a mile. These held 2 marten and a 33# male coyote. Pretty stoked as I come up to the 750 Catch-All set where I caught the wolverine last week. Low and behold another 28# male coyote. I feeling good, traveling upriver to the bait with a wolverine working the trail ahead of me. He some how tripped my 330 cubby without getting pinched. He's made it thru a fence of snares and as I round the corner, I see eyes in the headlight. What a beautiful 28# male wolverine waiting for me in a Duke #3 CS, just like the one 7 miles downstream where he left his middle toe. Now with a wolverine, 2 coyotes and 2 marten in the sled, I head back for the cabin. Up late but get the wolf and wolverine skun out and turn in at 2 am.

The wind picked up around 10pm and steadily got worse over night. Friday morn, I fired up the stove in the shed and skin the coyotes, marten and boarded everything but the wolf.
Made a call to town on the sat phone and was told I was needed to plow snow in town. Aw crap... the wind was dying down so I figured I better go. We didn't get the snow out there that they got in town or if we did it all blew away.

This morn I decided to run back up river real quick to have a look and came on this beautiful female wolf in another #9 pee post.

Good run and headed back down river.

Some wicked drifts to contend with on the way home and lots of trees across the trail. Made it to the truck one tired trapper.

Got some plowing to do for the next couple of days. Happy New Year all..

Does your Tundra do good pulling your sled? I have a Tundra and have been thinking about getting a sled for it. Is that sled the cross fox?

Happy New Year JR great pictures as always and thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Did you weight the second wolf be any chance ? I'd guess that it's about the same as the first grey one.

Thanks guys... The second wolf was a female and weighed in at 82#. Just got her skun out an threw here outside to cool off before I start fleshing and boarding. Otterman... There wasn't a collar on that first big male wolf.
FL cracker in AK.... the Tundra pulls the sled just fine and I built the sled and is pretty close to the same thing as a Cross Fox.
HFT.. I have all the snares you sent me out in the field just waiting for a wolf to stick it's head in them
Boco... I usually just cut trail around the wash outs but have built a few bridges. Need to take the time to build a few more good bridges.

JR, I saw one of your pee post pics. How do you secure them in the ground and what do you use for the pee? I'd like to see a diagram of how you do those. Is the trap in the picture under the gray gravel? And if so, how far is the trap from the scent? What do you use to cover the trap? Wax paper?

Inupiaq... The #9 at Pee Post Pass is anchored with a 18" #5 Rebar stake. I usually use those stakes on my ridge tops and occasionally on the trail where I use the same pee post year after year. I ice in a lot of traps too since I run so much river and also tie off to trees. For urine, i prefer to use wolf pee that I've picked up from wolves natural pee post that I collect but I've used dog urine, store bought wolf urine and even pee on the set myself. My wolves seem to shy away from the 2 different store bought urines though. The #9 on Pee Post Pass is under the pee gravel. An arctic ground squirrel dug a den right in the middle of my trap bed this year so I had to fill in his den to bed the trap. I put a piece of wax paper under the trap and one over the pan but under the jaws. Truthfully I don't have a set measurement for placing the trap away from the post or scent. I've set the pan 10" to 18" from the post or scent kind of depending on the size of the post. Smaller posts like the flat rock on Pee Post Pass, I set close. It seems like they step over and walk all over the shorter posts. I found that I will catch a lot more females when the trap is set close and I'm assuming that it is because they walk over the post and kind of squat on the post.
