That's awesome! I love the old Ulu's in the shadow box, bet they could tell a story or two.

i have a box of hand saws I got for 5 dollars at an auction because I liked one saw in the lot and then a guy who got a hand saws in his lot brought them over and gave them to me , know I know what to do with them.

about the only thing that goes cheaper than a hand saw at an auction is a short handled shovel

Use the oldest ones in the batch. Many of the more modern ones are high carbon just along the length of the teeth, and won't take and hold an edge like the older ones that are high carbon steel throughout.

Here's a few, Ray. I'm not sure what you're looking for or what quantity but I have more. Shed hunting gets me out of the house.

How do you know if it's a high carbon saw?

Age of the saw and color of the metal, which is sometimes tough to tell if they are really rusty. Age of the saw can usually be determined by the shape and wood of the handle, as well as the medallion that is on most of the Disston saws. Any saw that says Craftsman, Stanley, etc. does not even make it to the cutting table as they are what I would call "modern". I sometimes cannot tell if they are high carbon until I start grinding them, especially with the really rusty ones.

When you put it on a grinder it will show sparks like fireworks with multiple sparks. If they don't spark right when I grind them I throw them away. I want to keep mu ulu top quality.

Funny, a friend of mine who makes Ulus says ''It takes a 60 dollar hand saw to make a good Ulu'' and I think I know why now, Moosetrot. The blades I make have been from the same source, and , thankfully, high carbon throughout.

I have a fair understanding of metallurgy, spring and knife making, lathes and cutting/shaping machinery and such, but I just bought what he buys, handsaw wize.....so Ive made no comparisons in carbon, softness or edge holding with any other..

Unfortunatly we have a small population and a large percentage use an Ulu laugh Old handsaws are pretty far and few inbetween, so we mail order.

Lemme look and see whats around , maybe I'll have a brand name for ya.

I bought the saws almost 20 years ago , from an estate , I know a few are Disston they have the keystone medalion

the one I bought the lot for is a German saw can't fully make out the name but it cuts and sharpens well

the blade I chose is probably the lesser of the lot but I figured for my first attempt I would use it and I could try again once I figured it out.

my guess is this blade is 1960s or early 70s

this is the blade it was throwing several feet of sparks from the grinder

I stuck a compass in the top rivet hole and swung an arc that seemed to be about right then cut it out

there is an antique store here in town that has a barrel of old hand saws most with broken handles or loose rivets probably plenty of decent steel in there to make ulu

it's a little rough but not a bad first , I know what I will do different for the next
the rivets on this saw were not good, pressed in , I found replacement hardware at the hardware store.

a fiber cut off wheel on a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder very slowly outside at just a few degrees making many passes as to not heat the steel to much then a file to cut the bevel , then cleaned it up on some stones.

it is a single bevel

Sounds good. I think I will try one. Have many old saws laying around.
