Likely a very good move for Weatherby. A side note - Weatherby does not (and never has) manufacture their rifles, HOWA makes all of the Weatherby lines of rifles uaing Weatherby specifications....for Weatherby. Their shotguns are made by Huglu in Turkey.

I owned a very early 300 Weatherby built on a Mauser action for a few years.

After 1959 the Mark V actions were built by Sauer in Germany. The older German Mark V's are beautiful rifles. They had Howa build the actions in 1969, but I believe they have been made in the US for some time.

I took orders for two custom shop Mark V's in 2006-2007 from customers. One took a year and a half and the other guy cancelled his order after 12 months. They hadn't even started the stock yet. The head of the custom shop told me he couldn't find enough employees, especially for stock work.

I remember Paso Robles in the mid 70's. It was a beautiful small town in the coastal hills, but like many places in California it grew with trophy houses and the wine business. I can't blame them for leaving.

It was mentioned that Howa built rifles for them. I had a Smith & Wesson rifle in .270, It's action looked just like Howa's does TODAY. Did Howa pick up the action from S&W or ?

They should have never quit production in the west Germany plant in the 60's- 70's, greed ruins everything. The rifles produced in the Sauer plant are in a class of their own. late 60's early 70's weatherby went to howa and started producing their rifles in japan as a cost saving move.
