In the past there has been pics and discussions about using splitrings to attach traps to stakes, drags ect.

Does anyone want to share their experiences and pics of what coyotes can do to split rings....this is for further education of our fellow trappers.....

Thanks for your input.

I tried them years ago on drags to attach to trap chains but had too many failures and lost animals with traps. There are better choices. Several got elongated due to part of the chain for some reason getting threaded onto to one of the splits. They work them hard and you will lose some equipment in time as I have.

X2 doesn't seem possible but it is.. My theory is the split ring catches there eye and they work it till it fails..without tools LOL

I've used the heavy duty split rings for years and have 100% confidence in them They have held quite a few 40 plus lb., hard fighting coyotes with zero issues.

They're cheap, Boss Paul sells them on the Store for $32/100, so I just double them up.

As long as the split ring remains intact and the chain or cable attaching point doesn't slip under one of the split sections they work well. However they don't do that 100% of the time. I had at one time used them with confidence 30 years ago until I began having an equipment failure more then a few times. Then I stopped using them entirely.

I see there have been others with my years of experience 40-50 years stating the same failure. Like a lot of things you will need to have it happen to you before you will think back at this topic.

Coyotes open them with there teeth enough so the chain worked around and came loose. Not often but in time it will happen. Had a deer in a CR that worked the cable loose ounce. Never found the deer, not good. It's not there not strong its because the cable or chain works out of the split. From what I saw.Good luck

I went though a phase where they where the greatest thing ever . then had failures .beyond what a coyote and time might do to one . Not all of them in the same package are as hard as the rest . I used heavy duty ones from a very reputable supplier and attached several hundred disposable anchors to my coon traps . The problem came when I pulled them .When I pull traps I normally take a 6'long stick about 2"in diameter wrap the trap chain around the middle and pry the disposable stake out of the ground . most of these split rings can withstand astonishing amounts of force without any signs of failure way more than any coyote could BUT there are 2 or three per hundred that stretch out under very little load . enough that I don't use any more to attach traps to anchors

I don’t have the experience to say, but it seems that the oval split rings should work better, since the chain will always pull on the ends. I’ve seen the oval ones available in several sizes online.

Can they be welded so they don't open?

Why would you use split rings then weld them?

There are much better attachments available. Try 3/16" quick links.

I have used them, liked them UNTIL I lost 2 coyotes and traps because they stretched the darn things out. The only difference was the coyotes were caught on a slight hill. Do not know if that made a difference or what. I got rid of them and went back to rivets.
