So my brother and I have a a coyote line out. We are directly on sign; piles of scat and tons of tracks. We caught a pair about two weeks ago and ever since then, were getting tracks up to about 10 inches form our traps, prints on our jaws and even our backing! What on earth could be the problem? Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

they dont want what you have for attractant. this time of the year is best time to use something either nasty or a big chunk of fresh cut stuff. i have been freezing my chickens that die throughout the year..chop em up into softball size chunks and toss down a hole. rabbit and squirrel works too. If you let it sit out and get a little rancid more the better. Im sure someone else will try to tell you you are using too much lure or bait or whatever but i dont believe you can over do it. sorry. just not been my experience. I have been using all my freezerburnt meat ive put into the bait freezer. It doesnt work so well when its warm enough for flies to make maggot soup from it, but right now is the perfect time since im not seeing any flies around here. I can only tell you what im personally doing and having luck with.

bacon grease and old cooking oil poured down the hole works too.

So you're thinking dirthole with nasty stuff is better at this time of year?

Gland lure at a flat set not far away from your dirthole . Bed in another trap where hes been dancing around your other trap.. and most of all Patience they will be back I bet.. Sometimes you get a weary one that just wont commit .. Coming into breeding season you may have more luck with a Gland lure type sets

I’ve been using gland lures on my sets. I was thinking of maybe placing another trap behind my main set. I’ll also try a dirthole with a flat set nearby. Thanks for the advice.

Set a half dozen at one spot, surely one of them will get one interested enough to step on a trap.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Try flat sets, maybe stepping on jaws is because trap is too close to hole? Flat set trap location is 6-8" out and a foot or less to the side, dirt hole straight out 8-9 " from pan
Seems like I was told you don't want too many sets for one group,

Lure goes on one side of trap end, put a turd about on end of spring lever on other end, they should walk beside lure from lure side or turd side, if they step over turd to sniff lure you should get coyote, if they sniff lure then go to turd same thing, if you see where coyotes foot usually goes you will see where trap should be, look at a spot a male lifts his leg to pee, you will see coyote steps about ten inches before and after peeing

This time of year is the breeding season lots of pairs etc it is literally the best time of year for gland lure I use alot of droppings as scent posts and clumps of grass if you know what a kickback is make one get them agitated a bit good urine and gland does well

I appreciate all the feedback but im literally already doing everything suggested. Using gland from Andy Weiser so i know its good gland. Just cant seem to get em to really work or pay much attention to the set.

I put a lure like on a grass clump at root level, or under edge of rock, gland lure goes on rock or clump object, I take foot guide turd and rub a bit of gland lure on it then position it about at end of spring lever, I usually put a pencil thick stalk or small stone on outside of trap opposite of side lure is on, this side has my loose jaw on it, dog side of trap goes on side of lure, make everything look like it does where bedded trap is.
Then I take my scratching tool and rake out my knee imprints, and try to make the 1-2 ft area around the trap bed look like the same, scratches look like a coyote did a kick back

I have pretty good luck with it for the past month. Not many flies out to make maggot soup out of it. If they do drag it out of the hole without getting caught they are rolling in it. I dont care what they want it for, just that they make an attempt to get at it. As it starts to warm up which wont be long around here i will ditch the dirtholes all together and go strictly to flat sets. I cant get em to work a dirthole in hot weather too much. The bait i was using until i ran out was really really tainted bobcat meat with beaver stuff in it. It was green and moldy and had a few maggots in it too. Some sort of nasty. I didnt use enough sodium benz and it tainted alot more than i meant to. Once i finally decided to try it out i was using a big heaping spoonful of it down a hole. They loved it. ALso when i put out the frozen chicken alot of times once it started getting maggots on it and nasty is when they were showing interest in it. I dont care what they want it for just so they stand in front of the hole to get at it. thats usually all it takes. you will catch alot of possums using nasty stuff, but thats just part of it. Ive about got the possums cleaned out where im trapping.
