I've occasionally seen very small quantities of limited (As in one option!)selection at Sportsmans, Boondocks, and in Cabelas. Never in a village store. If going hunting with an odd caliber like that and you have to fly, put a box of rounds in each of your checked bags, that way if one checked bag gets lost, you have rounds in the other.

My brother has one, that is why I checked on it. For people coming up here to hunt every few years, or people that live on the road system of Alaska, I say use whatever caliber you want that is appropriate for the size game you are pursuing and that you can afford in price, and can afford to wait on if it is not readily available. If you are planning on living in a bush village, get a more common caliber, like .270, 30/30, .308, 30/06, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H, 45/70. These rounds may not all be sold in a village store, but every village I have lived in has owners of these calibers that you can purchase rounds from if you get in a pinch. 35 Whelen is much more available on the road system than 9.3.

Yes, I was asking as a future resident and as something to have around camp in the early fall.

I did have a Whelen, I really liked that cartridge...and I still have the dies for it.

9.3x74 ammo is much, much more common. Well, actually, it is really common now, though probably not on every sporting store shelf in AK. 9.3x62 is a super specialty caliber. You may have to sell or trade your special vintage 9.3x62. Is it a double?

I was on Graf and sons and they had 15 different loads for that and usually doubletap has ammo for older rounds. Some of the lighter weight loads would speed that up some and modern lighter bullets have much great penetration than the older soft bullets did.

You can't get powder or primers delivered from the Lower 48 by USPS, UPS, or FedEx in Alaska. You are limited to what you find in the few stores that carry reloading equipment, or what you can get in your checked bags flying from the Lower 48.

You can put ammo in your checked bags. I don't think you can transport powder or primers.

That makes rolling your own a bit of a challenge then, doesn't it. I guess, that is unless one was to live near one of those few stores. Otherwise, I suppose it goes on the "things to get in town" list if traveling in on occasion from the bush country.
