Does a branch work, or's it best to use part of the stem of a young popple?
Do beaver prefer popple that's pretty freshly cut from a live tree (thin diameter).?
Should I scrape some bark off?
Do you place multiple sticks to attract beaver to a set?

I have access to Big Tooth & Quaking aspen. I don't know if beaver prefer 1 over the other.

I may try using Poplar bud oil at a set to make it more enticing or freshen it up.

Good choice. Harvest some new growth out of a slashing. Somewhere around an inch in diameter. I always cut what I think looks good, the pretty stuff. One stick about 18 inches long is what I use. It acts as more than just bait it indicates if more are around after a catch is made. Beaver caught and bait stick stolen is a good thing...beaver caught and bait stick standing not so much.

There you have It In a nut shell. Just about any green stick roughed up a bit for eye appeal and some poplar bud oil will do the trick. We talk about magic In a bottle that's about as close as you can get when It comes to a rat and beaver change up lure.
And Nimzy made some good points with what he mentioned.

I use little 12" sticks of it, an inch or so in diameter, and I rought up the bark. There was just a thread on here about beaver change up sets, with a pic or two like that on there, that I posted. Popple is universal beaver food, thus, a good bait stick, here , especially at ice out when they are hungry for something fresh .

This. ^. I try to find the smoothest, greenest, saplings I can find in the new growth slashings, I like them 1"-2" in diameter. Ive had beaver ignore the stuff thats scaly and rough that I've found in roadside ditches. Scraping the bait not only makes the bait more noticeable but it makes it more aromatic. Adding poplar bud oil or Caven's Bounty Beaver lure just enhances the bait even more.

I use as fresh as I can. You can smell poplar, so can beaver. I had read somewhere they can smell poplar a mile+ away? I do scrap off some bark for eye appeal. I leave the scrapings there too, more eye appeal and scent. I use multiple sticks, diameter, I try to mix it up.
I also freeze small poplar twigs with leaves on them for under the ice, that and 1" dia. pieces with some bark scraped off. I think it helps?

Fresh, diameter doesn't matter. Plain castor is the best.
