My family and I are preparing for our move back to PA! After 15 years out of state, we are coming home!!! I have 3 children and we would like to get a dog that would be a good family dog as well as able to hunt grouse, woodcock, pheasant with.
Any suggestions? What breed would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance.

I've owned labs all my life. They can do everything you are asking for and more. Mine have always been great family pets plus they hunt upland game and waterfowl and retrieve everything me and my buddies shoot. Mine come with me fishing and trapping too.
Eh...wot?

While I love my German wirehair I would suggest you look at either a Gordon or English setter they are just better family dogs if you have small kids and can be trained do hunt anything trail blood and are easy to train and eager to please
Personally I lean more towards the Gordon then the English but that is just personal favorite of the spring set line

Or, you could just get a German Shorthair Pointer, or an English Setter. Not the skinny English Setters most Breeders have today, look for an old style English Setter. the big, heavy blocky head English types.

The best bird dog I ever had was a pointer/lab cross that I got at the shelter.
Got her for a narcotics dog and let her out for a bit in an enclosed training area where I had some quail in launchers for the bird dogs...she went right on a great point and retrieved like a champ.
Great disposition and she became the house dog.

Bout any breed of dog is more reliant on how it's raised. Families that are like a circus and always have drama, have dogs that act the same, and families that are laid-back have dogs that are laid back.
All in how you raise them.

Had to argue with the above. Mac

I myself am a lab fan, loving , loyal, obedient, and high energy. Find a dog that fits your family and lifestyle. Like hippie said, dogs will act the same way as the people raising them. My mailman told me the other day, good dogs have good owners, he said I had good dogs, lol.

My newest addition loves to fly too!
