I believe it's what we call rich pine. Used to hunt in goegia and find it in old clear cuts as stumps. I still have a small box left for starting fires. I had a bunch and come to find out the wife was using a hand ful of it in stead of kindlin to start fires in the stove.

The richest finds I've had were in trees that died slowly. Blown over such that less than 1/3 of its roots were still in the ground. Fire kills. Etc. Red and White pines always have some FW, no matter how they died. Quick way to find FW is walking around in a pine forest smacking dead branches with a stout stick. If the branch breaks, not FW. If it bounces, may be worth gathering. Saws and axes work best.
On sale FW goes for $1/lb in stores around here. Making our own fatwood by intentionally damaging trees takes years. Some heat wood, then submerge it in hot melted resin or wax. The prolonged heat allows it to soak in. Cook up some wood soup, effectively. So common hereabouts that there's no need, but that might help those having trouble finding it.
