I have looked through the archives and found a bunch of good information on different ways to target them so thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in that regard. However, before I can get to that point I need to locate some. I live in southern Wisconsin, like 15 minutes from Illinois so I know I have to go several hours north but thats about it. I have no connections up north so I will mostly likely be cold rolling up there for a few days trying to fill the tag. Is anyone willing to point me in the right direction and provide me with advice? I am not looking for someones sweet spot or anything like that just hoping for a bit of guidance. Thanks in advance for your help.

Tom

There’s a decent population in and around the Black River State Forest. That should be about 150-170 miles north of you?
It may be a bit of a crap shoot without snow on the ground in order to locate tracks and help narrow down your search.

Handitrapper gave good guidance, healthy populations also exist in the Chequamegon National Forest and Flambeau State Forest about 300 miles north of you.

Lots of them around here. I could hook ya up with some good public land that has plenty of them. Also enough private land I'm sure you could catch one if you had a couple days to trap. When are you thinking?

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine!

I can give you my some spots on public where I have seen tracks. I'm in the Wisconsin River/Petenwell area that Joe talked about. I'm currently trying to catch one on private land in the next county for a guy at work. That hasn't worked out so well yet, but my backup spots are yours if you want them and I find the time to show them to you!

Take the area given to you above and then scout the areas for down trees. Fisher and cats hunt the down trees as rabbits, squirrels, birds[grouse] mice use these areas for shelter. My first place I set in new locations. Of course it helps if there is an edge ie log road, spruce edge, stream, ridge line.
Once I have been in an area for a few years can better acess where, many cases still use some of my old down tree areas.
