At what temperature do most people start using waxed dirt, any night below 32 degrees? Current forecast calls for daily highs in the 40’s and lows of 26-28 degrees.

I don't start setting until mid November. Use it from the get go.

My area the low temps occur in the early morning hours, at this time of year. Our ground is still warm, and freeze up may not occur or occur just before daylight.
But we northern folks are skating on thin ice this time of year. Experience has shown better to freeze proof sets when temps start bouncing up & down.

Hern,
I’m thinking the same way, the temps are borderline and the catch is potentially made before there’s an issue. I’m not trying to ration my waxed dirt… but there’s a lot of trapping left.

If the soil @ your set location is damp and temps are borderline? I would use waxed dirt or peat. Why take the chance?

I start using waxed dirt from the start. Season here has been very wet. Waxed dirt makes the difference. If there is any doubts that it works; the lid on the pail i keep my waxed dirt in while on the line was left partially open over night. Next morning I found an inch of water in the pail. I poured it out and the dirt underneath was dry.

Wish I would have made waxed dirt this year. I would have used it from the start, its been raining on/off for most of the fall and I really despise doing the same work over and over, also always seems like once you mess with a set it takes a while for the coyotes to get comfortable with it again. Using wax dirt from the start keeps you from having to deal with that issue. I was just ill prepared this year and never got around to making some.
