I got my winch installed and I'm ready to build a base for my skinning machine. To get the heads at chest level the base will be taller for coons and lower for coyotes, so my idea is to weld 24" of chain to each clamp and then mount two eye bolts in the floor 12" apart and attach chain with snaps or quick links. Then I could just raise or lower the clamps by one link increments for any size critter. Any cons to this approach ? Any pics of this type of set up ? -Thanks

Not sure this is what you are talking about...
I skun for a several years with chain anchored to floor with hoist overhead. (before I heard about skun'n base)
5 links of tow chain, bolted to floor for anchor. Chain length to fit your needs. Pictured, chain is one piece with giant S-hook in center to hook onto anchor chain. Weld Vice Grips onto chain.

Only issue- I got tired of bending down to the floor, to pick up clamps.
So I switched to skun'n base. (with base, clamps are about knee level and ceiling height wasn't an issue)

Don't get me wrong, This setup worked great for me...

Just re-read your post.
Why do you want 'heads' at your chest level? To proceed with skun'n the face?
Reason I ask, once I get to the head with hoist & skun'n base, I release Vice Grips. Hold pelt with rag, then walk backwards creating tension as I cut ear butts, eyes and nose. Am skun'n at a great angle now, to keep the tension on. Walking backwards to skun head, you can keep the tension on and have face at your chest level where it's easy to see and work.

Yes, like your picture except chains spaced about 12" apart and each on it's own eye bolt.

Sure seems like a lot of screwing around when you could just make a single cable slip noose and be done with all those chains and clamps.
Open the coon gather as much of the flank and tail hide and slip It through the noose. Then hook It up to your eye bolt and get to skinning. If you run out of height just back off on the winch and re adjust your cable .
I just don't understand this vise grip mentality. I guess I can blame It On ADC. LOL

There was a song that went something like this. "Take these chains form my heart and set me free." LOL

Hey beav...

kyron - you'll hate picking up them grips off the floor. Also, you'll end up putting them chains so the grips are about 16" off the ground and you'll never adjust them again. This is precisely why skinning machines don't need to be adjustable, it just adds extra cost and extra learning time, you'll adjust and move and all that then you'll put them in the one location where they work for everything and you'll never move them again.

This is exactly how I’m doing my new setup, intsead of the base I used in the past. Gonna use a cast eye bolt with a threaded anchor in the garage floor. Then just unscrew it so that it’s out of my way during the off-season.

Brian why don't you just add the eye bolt to your base? I guess that would be to easy. LOL

I threw my base in the junk when I moved. And Don’t have a fur shed @ my new place. Not allowed to build one either. So it’s back to work in the garage for me. Base is kinda awkward to work around with the chair anyway.
