Got a call from a guy that has "coons"in his garage attic, I heard them up there when I arrived and set 5 live traps with dog food and chicken. Any ideas how I can up my game and catch these critters?.

I usually use buckets in attics BUT, also set cages in the yard wherever they are coming down from the house........tree?.....downspouts?
Bait with sweets like Blackies Fur King or Strawberry jelly mixed with grape Jello powder..or ANY jelly mixed with a different Jello powder

JMO...Need to find the "HWW". How they're getting up there, where their activity areas are once in the attic and why, the why is the easy part. I would find out if they are even approaching the traps. I've had people ask what kind of bait they should be using because the bait they were using didn't interest them. So I asked, how do they know the bait they're using isn't getting their attention? They had no idea, so I suggested placing trail cams on the job, purdy easy thing to do. The coon weren't even traveling in the vicinity of the traps. They moved the traps and used the same bait and finished the job. Cameras are huge on adc jobs, why they aren't utilized more idunno, but I would have cams on the job if I were stuck.

The "HOW?". Don't know what seminar the tech who did this went to for seal ups, not sure I want to know either.

Once they're in..the "WHERE?"...travel routes activity areas.

And the "WHY?"..

You can try 100 different bait and lures but before you go down that road, I would be sure that your traps are on location and you know or have a good idea on what part of the attic they are primarily on. You might be using some supah dupah leet bait from the "bestie" bait maker on the planet. That means nothing if the traps aren't on their route. If you have cams set up and they are by passing, you need to find out why and then possibly start changing things up.

I like to use sweet bait&lures that are put up on a lure/bait stick and when I use a ground bait it goes in a basket, and in your face traps. JM2C

How do you know you're hearing coons? Your post doesn't say how you confirmed that there were raccoons up there, just that you heard noises up there. Without confirmation, there's a good chance you could waste time trapping for the wrong animal.

I agree that the best trap, and/or the best bait won't matter if the trap isn't where they are. Also, make sure the trap is strong enough for a raccoon. I've seen them get out of lesser traps more than once by removing the door from the inside.

They may have been live trapped before. Try using DP's or conibears.

I like to blow there minds with smell and sweet bait of more than one kind. Put a little outside the trap on the door side. Make it easy for them to get to. I always put some jam in a small bag behind the pan for them to see. Make sure the trap does not rock or tip. JMO

Some good comments above. I guess 1 thing I'd try is a different attractant. A little grape jelly with side of mollasses and the coon would have a hard time refusing.

Molasses and grape jelly wouldn't even be a factor if the bait/traps weren't in a location to present that odor to them. Personally don't think those two combined have a good call odor that could reach out to the coons that were on the other end of the house and never came across that location. Put that bait and trap in an area that they frequent, possibly a different outcome. The original post has little to no information on where the traps are placed and where the entry/exit points are along with what has been done on the job besides putting five cages down. baited with chicken and dog food jmo

If they are not going into the trap I doubt it is the bait. could be trap smart or trap shy but I don't think all of them would be. As stated before put the trap where they have to walk into it and then let the bait do it's job. also I will use different baits or scents in the same trap. Bob J said it many years ago. different odors segregated will create excitement.

I use a few drops of shellfish oil near the trap, but not in it, to attract them and the grape jelly on Marshmallow inside the trap to finish them. I never use Shellfish oil in the trap because of neighborhood cats.
