Was thinking about making up some Tire sets for coyotes. Never did It before so here goes.

Great eye appeal but snow would make them better but that's not going to happen for awhile. So I have a few places In some bean fields where they left lots of bean chaff. I figured I could drop a tire In these spots. I could dig a shallow trap bed lay the chain out on the ground and drive the stakes so I could just place the tire over the stake ends. That way I wouldn't have to dig such a deep trap bed.
I would place the trap about 5" out from the edge of the tire. And have bait In that area Inside the tire. And maybe a bit of urine or lure. I'm not sure If a coyote will step Inside of the tire so that's why I'm placing the trap outside of the tire.
For bedding I would line the bed with wax paper the use the 3 peg system to anchor the trap In place. Then cover with peat moss and then blend It In with bean chaff.
So what do you think?

Good Morning Beav, I have used the tire set before...it worked just O.K. but it did work. I tried your idea of setting outside and caught fur but I had much better luck catching coyotes and other fur inside. I liked the semi-weather proofing of the inside of the tire due to blowing wind, drifting snow etc...Also as you mentioned pre-season work or before setting work can be done...ie digging out trap beds or attempting to freeze proof the inside of the tire.....(oil dry worked very well for me in freezing weather conditions). A guy could use a disposable stake or drag...I did both preferred drag with heavy chain.

Thanks Mike.

I thought about screwing a board to the bottom of the tire then either filling It using some super dry hay or corn cobb grit. I have both In a unlimited supply. I could use the 3 nail anchoring system on the board.

But I could probably just chop a trap bed like I described.

I like that oil dry Idea.
Time will tell I have 3 tires In the shop and I already have some rat carcasses In the tires LOL It was raining today so I backed off.

I always heard to put the trap inside the tire and stake down the tire so it cannot move.

Maybe try putting out two tires. One tire put trap inside, other tire put trap outside.

I would be interested to see your results.

Why not use the tire as a drag? Yes, I'm bored also.

I just figured that the coyote on approaching the tire would circle around It before It stepping Inside. May be I'll put one trap Inside and one outside.
I thought about using the tire for a drag but lets see If I can catch one first.

Yep...I did use the tire as a drag and kind of played around with that...problems developed when a few coyotes pulled the trap attached to the tire into a barbed wire fence....not good. Smaller car tires do not make good drags.
Now I wrap my drag chain once around the tire and hammer the drag points(I like JC Conners drags) into the ground...its about the middle of the drag chain. That reduce issues significantly...and reduced pounding stakes into frozen ground. Not the best set in the world but in late winter coyotes love muskrat/beaver meat...did tangle up a few big coon too.

Good luck

So today I checked out my carcass dump coyotes have been on the pile. Right next to the carcass dump Is a bean field and a large pile of bean chaff. I dumped the tire there today but didn't have any traps with me. Tomorrow It's getting set.
One trap In the middle and one trap just outside the edge.

Better off blind setting them trails than playing with that tire.

Your going to blind set those trails In frozen ground? Then with out snow you have no idea what trails the coyotes are using.
If I was just going to blind set trails I would just hang CRs and hope for the best.
Will see how this works out.
